Well, thing is I see that my master cylinder is leaking inside the car by the paddle (I suppose the rubber/seal is perished).

What are my options? I read somehere on the forum that it might be cheaper to replace then to attempt to overhaul/resleeve. I also read about the washers/plate that one is to look-out for when removing so as not to lose it in the car (I will look at my workshop manual to see what it says).

How much am I looking at spending for a master cylinder, or should I replace the seals first and see if that not makes a difference to my life?

The MC in VW's are not rocket science, If you un-clip the cir clip, it may fly off into the dark corner of the workshop, but if you hold a towel over it, it will be fine.

Most spare shops have a lot of rubber seals, that you can match up, or you can get a repair kit from volkspares, goldwargen, and others.
Normally a quick hone with a stick with 400 emery paper with oil, will clean up a bore of any MC.
If to go to a scrap yard, you will pick up a golf MC for little bucks, or buy a new one.

When you losen the bolts that hold the cylinder in place do not remove them, do not losen the first bolt compleetly then losen the second one, but do not pull it throu the boddy let is still stick out on the outside and then losen the other one and do not take it out. that way you keep the spacer from foling in the car

Retro, I you telling me that a Golf MC will work just fine? Any mods needed or is it a straight bolt-on?
I assume it will be cheaper to get a golf one as they more readily available. It sucks living in Pietermaritzburg at times as the guys do not stock some/most spares. Our goldwagen couldn't give a dam about Beetles and spares

When you fit all 4 wheels disk kits, you have to fit a golf or other MC to stop it binding up you brakes.
When you fit a Golf MC, you may have to only adjust your push rod on the Brake peddle, or you may have to modify it, depending on the year.
You can get a new cheap MC from Wolfsburg http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/wolfsburg_ ... brakes.cfm
They offer German as well as Brazilian.
May want to look it up
