Vader, can you give a bit more info re the gelcoat colour that you are planning. How would that compare to spraying the body, cost, etc? Would it be possible to do on a beach buggy body as well, seeing as it is a similar construction?

You get the Clear Gel Coat and then add the pigment you want to it. There is a list of 5 other things that need to be perchased aswell like the hardner and a thinner, dont have the list with me but Ill post it for you. The FG gets cleaned, the Gel Coat mixed and then it can be sprayed like normal. This way once Ive sprayed the final Ruby Black colour, if it gets scratched the black undercolour shows instead of the current White.
If you are just going to change the colour with GelCoat then the cost for material is around R700 ex labour. But if you want to then spray 2k you have to add those costs.

Ill post the list later for you Loopy....

If you want to do this, don't ask for Gelcoat.

Gelcoat is unwaxed and needs another layer of resin on top of it to cure fully.
You need to ask for Flowcoat; Poolcoat; or Hotcoat (all the same thing). These contain a wax in solution which will come to the surface keeping oxygen away from the curing resin.
Available in sprayable and brushable consistency - you don't want to mess around too much thinning it (you will need to use stryrene monomer to do so if you have to) This will affect the cured properties and durability of the coating.

You'll need a gun with at least a 2mm nozzle to spray it, and gun set-up is critical. You will be seeing a LOT of orange peel especially with too much pressure.

Also watch film thickness you want 400-500 microns. Less won't cure, too thick will be more prone to chipping.

And of course really good prep (sanding, degreasing etc) of the existing surface to get any kind of bond. It is best done over fresh resin where there will be more chemical bonding happening. You don't have this Vader, so take extra care to key the surface REALLY well.

Thanks Vader and Barry. Barry. not to hijack Vader's tread, but is this an option to spruce up a fibreglass beach buggy, compared to normal a spray job?

Could be cheaper and less steps, but it is harder to get a good finish. Is it not an option just to cut & polish the existing gelcoat?

Unfortunately, the body has a couple of spider cracks that will need to be repaired.
