Your ring gaps... probably what happened was someone installed new 1600 rings onto an oversized piston. I once paid someone how came highly recommended to replace my rings. Couldnt for the life of me figure out why I had so much blowby afterwards. Was told they will run in. When I took the engine apart I found they were std rings on a 1.5mm oversize piston... similar issue to what you found
