Re: Type 3 dash covers RHD & LHD
Hi Hans,
Welcome to the forum.
Maybe you would like to introduce your self to all the other members of this forum, you can do that at this thread....
http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... start=4755
To reply to your question, there is 3 ways that you can fit this Dash.
But you must only use one of them NOT all three.(Use option 1... or option 2... or ..option 3)
OPTION 1
OR you fit it over your old dash, by trimming the OLD dash to fit inside the NEW dash cover. Then you fit the two together.
OPTION 2
OR you make sure the new dash fits OK on the steel base, then you put a thin layer of plastic, or spray on film onto the steel Base that is part of the car.
Then you spray expansion foam into the back of the NEW Dash cover and quickly press it onto the steel base that is part of the car. Then to keep doing this till the NEW dash is filled at the back and fits right to the car. You may have to trim the foam if it sticks out under the NEW Dash.
OPTION 3
OR you just fit the NEW dash strait onto the car, as it is now, with out any foam.
If you look at the photos, of the fitted Dash covers, ALL of them are fitted without any thing under them, and they look and fit good.
The clocks fit as normal, you may have to use the clock spacers, or you may have to take them out.
I had to take them out, as my new dash fitted just right without the spacers under the clocks.
Just try till you happy with the fit.
Hope this helps.

May help other fit there dash covers elsewhere in the world.vwfanatic67 wrote:Got my dash installed in the notch. Looks amazing and is way sturdier than I thought. I first thought I would install it over the existing one for strength but when I came down to it I realized it would be much easier to use it by itself. I used the old one as a template for the bottom holes and drilled the top ones one at a time and had to trim to small areas on the top. Guages fit nicely. I did however feel it was nessecary to remove the two metal spacers out of a really bad dash I had to put behind the grab handle. All in all really simple installation and looks awesome. I got to do the one in my square next as I bought one early and one late one. Here are some pics of it installed.

Retrovan, ja broer, what would South Africans come up with next? We struggle to get these sought after parts overseas if you are lucky and here is a South African that thinks outside the box.
Excellent!!!!

Re: Type 3 Dash covers - RHD & LHD
So I have changed the RHD a bit, to look like the original, cleaned up around the clocks, was a hell of a job, but I feel well worth it.
Have a look and let me know what you think.

Hope you like...

Re: Type 3 Dash covers - RHD & LHD
Hello,
Is there a chance you would be able to make a top dash for the type 4 412, it does not have curves like the type 3 around the dials.
I would love one
enjoy the weekend

Re: Type 3 Dash covers - RHD & LHD
Would have to have a look at it, as well as the quantity that i would be able to sell, as to whether it would be viable.andersonj wrote:Hello,

The cost is in the mould, not the production. as this takes time and money to get it right.
maybe get some info on the amount that guys would need, then let me know.
