Are those all late bays Christian ? Whats the story there - a sad site. Hopefully they can yield some spares if not be saved before they end up with the scrap dealer - which will inevitably happen

It's a scrapyard that was ordered to clear everything. Not much left but a couple of Ford F100s and those buses. I'm never around when they're open, but they never used to sell anything. I don't know if the buses are for sale now.

Maybe we should start a fund and put a nice barn on the front portion of your Vaal property so we start saving some of these buses we keep coming across
VDBL is full of bays in the wreckers yards. Last time I went on a bus hunt there were some in the yards that looked in better order than some I see on the road.

Ever since I took the photo of the four bays at the top of this thread, I've been trying to contact the scrapyard owner. It turns out the original owner of the scrapyard died some years ago and now it's in the hands of his son who, as is usual with this kind of place, is an anti-social hillbilly type who thinks his scrap is worth more than gold. Several people had told me they had tried to buy these buses in the past, but gave up because the owner was too difficult.
Anyway, I eventually arranged an appointment via the guy's mother and then brought my secret weapon to bear: mrsfig. Fortunately, mrsfig can charm any man, and we were able to agree on a deal for five scrap baywindows after several meetings and many hours spent. We managed to buy them for a few hundred rand more than scrap metal value.
Then, over three days in April and May this year, we recovered the buses. As you can imagine, this was quite an epic. Firstly, the hillbilly owner was paranoid, so would not leave open any of the four gates we had to move the buses through, and all the gates were buggered, needing to be lifted as their rails were buried under earth and trash. And, of course, every time we went there, the hillbilly only started moving his many scrapyard dogs and opening gates after we arrived, rather than when I called him beforehand to say we were on our way.
When I surveyed these buses to work out a value, they were so overgrown and there were thousands of ticks in the grass, so I didn't notice that three of them were missing hubs and one had no steering ... All of them were partially buried in the ground and were missing wheels.
Luckily we did the recovery with my new Gelandewagen, which dragged them all out without any fuss. The big job was clearing the bush around them and getting as many wheels as possible on them (three of them took only three wheels due to missing hubs). The first stage of the recovery involved getting the buses on wheels and dragging them to a staging area where we could load them onto a trailer. This was quite exciting, as the buses had to be dragged through three gates and three separate yards full of scrap cars, while most only had three wheels and one had no steering and another no tie rods.
On the first day we got three of the buses to the staging area and one back to Vaalplasie. The second day saw us drag one more bus to the staging area and only one to Vaalplasie, and the third day was comparatively easy as it only involved putting the last three buses on the trailer and towing them back to Vaalplasie.
They are now safely at Vaalplasie awaiting the next stage of their lives, in which they are at the heart of a secret plan by mrsfig that will be revealed in due course.

Congratulations to both Mr. and Mrs. Fig. I'm sure the hard work will pay off. At least they will now have the change to do what they were built for and that is work for us(you)
