6V starter motor for sale
Just took it out of my 1962 bus. Original Bosch / VW. German made. It runs but roughly. Will likely need a rebuild soon. I'm upgrading to 12v.

that is a nice starter if you buy a 12v bendix remove the bush and use it with the old starter and gearbox bush you will have the best starter ever. I have been using one to bench start my engines for the last ten years.

Hi Armand, I'm not with you... What do you mean remove the bush? The bush in my gearbox is completely buggered. I need a new one and since this is a 6v I was thinking of upgrading to 12v and putting in an oversized bush. I'm keen to know why you reckon this is better?

Re: 6V starter motor for sale
Hi as you know the shaft on a 6v starter is thicker than a 12v starter. The 12v bendix is equipped with a bush that when removed allows it to fit over the 6v shaft. this allows you to have a 6v bush in the gearbox but use a 12v flywheel.
Why I like this?
When used with 12v the 6v starter cranks over faster and stronger. On my engine stand starting large high compression engines is always difficult and I like a starter that turns the engine over faster. The 6v starter is happy on 12v and wont fail unles something else is wrong.
Financially after buying the bendix and overhauling the starter you would probably have spent as much as a new starter anyway so there is no financial benefit in doing this

Re: 6V starter motor for sale
Hmmm thanks Armand for that detailed explanation. I think what I'll end up doing is fitting the 12v starter and keeping this one til I can source the parts and get it rebuilt. Any idea where I could get a replacement 6v bush?
Thanks again,
Mike
