Lolette Spider Restorarion

Post by Wentzel »

I picked up the Spyder (Puma / Lolette) as a project since it is something I haven't seen before and i like the shape. Never done a kit car or buggy and it is all new to me. The PO talked a lot and told me it is a Puma Spyder but after the discussion on the forum I was convinced it is more likely a Lolette spyder even though it still looks a bit different. Maybe another model?

Rear view. Butchered to fit the type 4 2l with flat cooling.

Image

Rear inside view. I got an idea of how it is supposed to look with two grilles on the sides and rounded towards the bottom.

Image

Flat engine with carbs, alternator but no airfilter, plug wires etc.

I don't know if the car was ever completed and running an the dash is non existent as is wiring and a lot of other bits and pieces. There is however a few different colours of paint over each other that doesn't make sence. It used to have doors but someone moulded them into the body at some stage.

I was hoping someone could help me with more information and maybe pictures of how it was supposed to look especially the rear and rear lights, interior etc. No Windscreen either so i am hoping one could be made up at a decent price.

This will be a long term project but I want to make it look like new and fun to drive.

I like the shape too. Good luck I see a LOT of work there. Are you going to keep the type 4 engine?

I agree on the amount of work and haven't worked with fiberglass. Still deciding if I should learn to do it myself or have someone with the skills do it. I would like to do all the work but I don't want to end up with it not looking as i want it to. Not sure about the engine yet, I was thinking of converting it to upright cooling if it is in good condition.

Congrats on the "new" project, lots of work ahead. If you have a look at my project post you will see what the back of a RSK 718 Spyder looks like, I know it is not the same but it may give you an idea.

Working with fiber glass is not to difficult just remember not to mix to much resin as it goes hard quickly.
Also I would suggest that you make a mould/backing out of cardboard or something that is flexablee for places that were cut away, attach it to the rear of the car and start with smallish pieces of FG

Do not remove the backing untill the FG is dry.

Most important dont be in too much of a rush when working with FG.

Hope this helps abit

Thanks guys!

I found in the history what is was built from. Porsche front Lola T70 rear and karman ghia roof and windows (hardtop) guess ghe window is going to cost me then .

I will attempt the glasswork maybe with a little practise. Finishing off is my concern I want it smooth and 100%.
I think I will build the rear as a combination of the T70, Rsk and my personal touch. Will have to find proper mesh / grilles.

Working with fibreglass is not that difficult. But it is very messy and sticky so be prepared with lots of extra cloth and acetone. The nice thing is the result is entirely up to your imagination. If you are not happy with the result it is very easy to change or do over.

Hi I think that the lola tail is beautifull by itself. there is a guy in PE that has done all the work to build a good replica and maybe he can mould a tail for you which then would be simple to graft on.

This post also has a lot about fiberglass work in general so look and learn.
If I were to undertake this build I would convice someone with a ghia to allow me to make a mould of a roof and graft it to your body it will be a very simple job and would really make the car in my opinion.

Thank you Armand a lot of usefull information there I will have a look and read through it.

I have been reading on the other builds a while and like to see the results and progress. Quite a nice result with the seats out of fiberglass! Was that your first attempt.

Any tips on fiberglass suppliers and or products?

Thanks

Thanks Herman I will have a look.

I didn't expect it to have a 5 speed and didn't even ask. So far it looks like a normal Beetle gearbox and I dont know of any 5 speed in aircooled's as std.
