Post by Pinch »

Morning Aircooled mates,

I need to replace my 1600SP's intake manifold studs. Now I notice the PO replaced one of the studs with a stainless bolt and removed the head. and it is quite sturdy. Coulld I do the same with the other and what impact could the stainless have.

Also pleas give advise on making it leak proof.
S :zhelp:
I need to remove and replace the exhaust studs aswell, any tips on NOT to break them whem removing

do not use stainless. It will cause the aluminium to corrode and if you ever need to remove it again, it will be nearly impossible without drilling it out. Unless you use an anti-seize formulated for stainless into aly, like Tef-gel.

For the exhaust studs... plenty penetrating oil and plenty time for it to soak in. Dry it up, apply some heat to the head but not enough to burn the oil and turn the nuts out using the double nut method or vice grips.

Use a new gasket and you shouldnt have leaks.

Hi Tony, Thank you for tips, I should visit you when Im in Cape Town again and photo copy your aircooled brain. :D

One more question, what type of gasket would you recomend for the exhaust, I use the stuff from the complete gasker set, will they stand their own.

the stuff in the gasket set is fine... I use them. Otherwise, you should be able to buy gaskets from Midas or similar places.
Exhaust gasket sheeting is pretty pricey.

You welcome to visit if I am in town, but you leave my brain where it is... no axes or swords, thanks
