1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
Hi Everyone
I was wondering if you could advise: I am interested in purchasing a 1971 type 3. I've checked the chassis number and confirmed the year model but the vehicle has a "Volkswagen" badge on the back instead of the "1600-TL" I was expecting to see...so I'm a little nervous as to whether the badge is original or was replaced at some stage.
Does anyone know anything about the badging on these vehicles through the years? Or perhaps a link to somewhere where they are discussed?
Thanks

Re: 1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
Hi Evan
Could you perhaps post a pic of the car? What is the 'font' of the badge?
Like this -

or this?

VWSA seized production of the Type 3 in 1969 when it was replaced by the 411, but there were a few models sold afterwards. If it is a true 1971 model, it is in all probability an import, as they were produced elsewhere up to '72 (if I am not mistaken)

Re: 1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
If I recall correctly, the Fastback in SA always had "1600TL" on the back, but the other two always had "Volkswagen" on the back with an extra '1500' or '1600'

Hi Pine
Thanks for the info; I went and viewed it on Wednesday and the badge is the top one (horizontal).

Re: 1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
Thanks Herman; it seems the vehicle was imported from the UK to the then Rhodesia and hence the badging differences. It is a great looking vehicle and has only one bad rust spot, but the motor is in a pretty bad way (has a replacement SA Type 1 SFAB engine) and a single side draft carb and doesn't pull very well. Aside from that it is 100% original...so I'm in 2 minds as to whether I should buy it because I'm looking for a car that I can show...time will tell...

Re: 1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
So how about posting photo's of the car, as we are starved of any type 3 threads here on the forum.
Also as stated, we do not see many type 3's of the model year 1971 here in SA.
If you not going to buy the car, maybe someone here on the forum would like to buy it, and in this way preserve this car for the future, and not land up in a Junk Yard

Well here is my Fastback Project thread... http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 81#p194269
Maybe it will inspire you to look at a Type 3 project with more interest.
I personally feel that the type 3 was the best aircooled made by VW, and it still tic's all the boxes.

Re: 1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
Lol...sorry guys...it took me a while to get back to this (I've been on leave for a week and a half). Here are some pics of the car which I have bought...for a LOT of money
but believe it is worth it!
Now all I need to do is get the few things that are standard fixed, and then decide to what extent I am going to restore her...

That car has been on the market for quite a while, saw it advertised on TheSamba quite a few times as well.
Congratulations, looks straight and original.

Re: 1971 type 3 with "volkswagen" badge on the back
Thanks; yes that's where I saw it...I had an option of a shell but after considering the cost of getting the shell to the state of this one, and what I would like to spend on this type 3 to get it to show condition, I decided against it. Spoke to Pierre of vdubtech as well and he was VERY helpful with some excellent advice that swayed my decision...so now I gotta pay up and go fetch it

I agree that the T3 is the best of all aircooled VW's. I miss my fastback. I prefer the earlier models that had a rounder nose.

Good luck with your excellent buy.
You have one of a very few, if not the only one, later then 1969, as they where not assembeld here after that.
Please start a project thread, and keep us informed, there are a few Type 3 droolers here.
