The question I keep getting asked....
Nothing, I am going to leave it is it was from the factory and preserve it as a panel van
At most, I'll build a small box for the toolbox which lives in the van and maybe a little storage area. But otherwise, its a panel van and will be preserved as such.

Practical thing about a panel/kombi is that 1.2M wide sheets of steel/wood/whatever will fit through the rear door.
Long lengths (which is too long to fit inside a typical bakkie with canopy), will fit inside a panel, so it stays dry on a rainy day and safe from thieves. In many aspects a panel is more practical than a doublecab.

The bus turned out really well Tony. Had a good look at it on Saturday, at the Aircooled Culture event. Really nice to see such a straight, unmolested example. Who painted it for you? Those window rubbers also look like excellent quality. Are those the ones you're currently importing?

About the exhaust noise mentioned elsewhere... Seeing that you have a 4 into 1 and dual silencers. As a test, Maybe block one silencer and compare.

Secondly, Fit an extension pipe around 1 to 1,5m long to the working silencer. Just as a test. The original Cowley exhaust of the 80's had some length after the silencer. Think this could have partly been why it sounded deeper, less of an "individual gunshot/leaking manifold gasket effect.
So did the old Grapnel type 4 exhaust, it atually extended the outlet by having a solid unperforated pipe reaching all the way inside to the other end of the silencer to have this "extra length" effect.
If this tests positive, then take the idea from there.

Small update...
didnt do much to the bus this time around.
It really is a zero effort vehicle. Starts up each time I want it to, drives as I want it to. Really enjoyable.

The one thing that I did do is decide that I dont like the Weber ICT carbs so I changed them out for Weber IDFs.
The ICTs were fine, but they ran super rich on the bus, leading to not so good fuel economy.
I had the IDFs on the shelf from previous engines in the Angrrr.
The only problem with the conversion was getting the manifolds to fit into the tinware. This was easily solved on the mill.
Gotta love having tools





And now the finished product.


The carbs are doing well and I am making decent progress tuning them. I have an odd flat spot just off idle when the engine is cold, but otherwise its going well.

Unfortunately, I didnt get around to getting the exhaust remade as I had too much on my plate during the 2 months I was home.
I also love the ability to load something 4m in length through the rear and still close the rear hatch.

Maybe I should clean my radio?

Are those CB's offset manifolds you're using with stock cylinder head tin? Must be great having the right tools to do the job properly!


Did you see the improvement in fuel consumption, after the carb swap, or are you still in the tuning phase?

using offset manifolds would have made my life easier as that is what the linkage kit was designed for... alas those manifolds were ported for Angrrr once upon a time so no longer fit stock heads.
Those manifolds were made by Dave Ingle back in the day. I dont know who he copied them from but it broke my heart cutting them as they are really stunning manifolds with only a tiny offset.

Still tuning so dont know about fuel consumption yet. Also, have not filled up again so no indication of the direction things are going yet.

Those Ingle manifolds look sweet. Didn't know he made them back in the day. Real hen's teeth you have there!

I have a set of CB offset manifolds with injector bungs for my EFI build. When I saw your clearance issue, I got a little worried. My manifolds are heavily ported, so not much material left to machine away to clear the tinware. I didn't think there would be a clearance issue, but I'll be sure to watch out for it.

Are you using your LM2 for tuning the bus? That would make life a lot easier getting to the right answer...

I was trying to get the manifolds to fit without taking half the engine apart to get the tins off so I could make space the proper way. You'll be moking yours up on the bench and can make the needed adjustments without much issue.

I will get around to using the LM2. For now, its just a process of changing the jetting as me backside says it needs changing and then driving it for a day to find out how it works.

Nice work there sport, Love the Engineers sidestep on the tins issue.

Bit concerned that you did not like the ICT's as I had lots of joy with them, but then i have never been an addict of twin port carbs.

Like two Aircooled motors, they never the same, both barrels are never the same, and always need some tweaking.

Land up having to file the butterfly's, or giving the one a slight twist, NO give me a single carb per side, and they spot on in no time.

Makes me think of the 4 side draft SU's in the old days, bitch to get right, but dynamite when you did.

Good to see you enjoying the bus, not many like the Panel Van like we do.

Think it's probably more about being much easier to change jets on the IDF's. Also that he had a set sitting on the shelf...

Dawie has it right. The IDFs are just more user friendly. Changing jets takes 2min, but with the ICTs you have to remove the carb top to get to the main jet which is inside the fuel bowl. You try to do this in a bus without a top access hatch. That plus the linkage is bolted onto the carb top, so I got to take the linkage apart then take the carbs apart, then put it all back together. In the bus, this is a real PITA. In a bug or T3 it wont be an issue.

The ICTs work well, but I cant tune them. The IDFs I can easily tune. And once I sort out my exhaust, I'll put the AFR monitor onto it and properly get the carbs running.
