Siam VW Festival Bangkok ,Thailand (extremely pic heavy)

Post by splitbusahollic »

Hi Guys
i have been meaning to post this for some time now , Now that Jolas (Paul) has shown me the "easy way " to upload pics it made it a lot simpler than before to upload so many pics for you to enjoy !! so finally here is the thread....

i have been very fortunate to be invited by one of my Suppliers to visit the "Siam VW Festival" as a guest in Bangkok on two occasions. It is an awesome show with a huge vw air cooled attendance and some guys even drive their AC VW's from Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia to attend !
You get to see all types of vehicles from Rat, show condition, original to slammed (with air-ride suspension). The festival is over a period of three days with the main event on the Sat afternoon, because of the heat ( around 42 Degrees, with 70% humidity and very little wind) it only kicks off around 4pm and run well into the night, there is so much to see in such a short time that some pics were taken at night !
Even the Royal Thai palace has it's own collection of AC VW's including some Buses and a fleet of type 182 RHD VW Things.
enjoy !

This is a double door Samba ! quite a rare bus , RHD :hangloose:

This Bus was a complete original RAT ( all rust on it was Original ! ), slammed to the ground !! Check out all the modifications in order to run it that low and accommodate the ride height !

These Type 182 RHD Things belong to The King , and are maintained by the Royal Palace, nice collection :hangloose:

The only mistake i could pic up was the overhead vent control lever that is fitted on the wrong side of the overhead vent. otherwise , Faultless !!

Image

Image

very nice "Shorty" Well built ! even the drop sides have been well shortened, Great Work on this one , i like the colour !!

Image

Image

Image

Slammed Baywindows !!

Yet another well restored single cab.

Image

Image

This is a nice panel (used to be an ambulance) ...the colours seem to work well as a single colour bus !

Image

Image

Nice Crew cabs ..

Yet a few more nice looking splitties ..

Image

Image

Image

A few more random pics...

Image

and this was a real dog !!

Image

Image

Image

A few pics of some of the parts for sale at the swap meet....(very overpriced, R5000 for a restored gauge !)

Image

Image

Image

Image

If you thought buses were expensive in SA ....have a look at this one, For sale @ TB790K which equates to around R380 000 "as is" with some very badly rusted areas! the left front dogleg is in very bad shape and you can see the tyre through the bodypanels !!
Then again it is a Camper "Wesfaria" according to the seller !  with some strange looking bullet indicators !

lastly some Arial pics supplied by the festival ...

I sincerely hope you enjoyed seeing such awesome V Dubs, as much as i did traveling all the way there and attending the festival ! It goes to show ..VW aircooled is very much alive all over the world..... 8)
i also went to Indonesia and visited a very interesting restoration facility there (got some great pics from that trip too) !! ..but more about that in another post another day !!
:hangloose: :hangloose:

Great, thanks for that. Wow, some great cars. Not so sure I like the slammed bays with the gear linkage running above the floor boards

I always forget that there is an entire industry out there on that side of the world... I always think of VW fanatics as being in USA, Europe, SA and Oz. I suppose its the language barrier...

@ Jolas , Thanks for the Heads-up on the new posting tool for pics Paul ! :hangloose:

Thanks Tony , yes it's massive in Asia, much bigger than we think , Malaysia , Singapore , Thailand , Japan , Indonesia all very big Aircooled vw supporters , even some in China !!
I'm also not big on the slammed stuff, it seems the "in" thing in Asia though !

Mmmmmmm, I wonder how far this one has been driven......

I'm sure it doesn't travel like mine

Thanks for sharing Jacques. I think keeping a bus in an original condition without some kind of mag wheel would be very unique and individual there. Everyone there has done the same thing.

@Sean
are you going to hate me if I put a set of 15" mag wheels on my bus?

Well, I cant hate you for it, but I'm most certainly not going to like the idea.

I don't mind mag wheels if its on some kind of fully modified bus, but your panel van is such a lovely unmolested original bus. Its actually quite rare to find a panel van that hasn't had windows of some kind cut into it.

Thats good to hear, now I won't have to hate you Tony

You have a real classic commercial VW vehicle there. To see these panelvans in such great original condition and without windows hacked into the sides is a real treat :hangloose:

Thanks for the great pics.

Images like that can certainly re-spark ones motivation to follow through with completion of their own build and interest in these beauties.
