the 122 is an industrial unit, possibly used as a gen set or a water pump.
The small toothed pulley would have been attached to a speed regulator (governor) to keep it running at (more than likely) 3000rpm.
It should be pretty similar to the beetle 1600, but I dont know the specifics

if you can use it in a beetle, maybe, but otherwise I doubt it. I'd like to see it in person but other than that it doesnt really interest me much

I don't know if anyone here has ever taken one of these industrial engines apart? It probably uses a T1 engine case.

These engines were usually not run beyond 3000rpm, and I can't imagine them having run too many hours. You could possibly salvage a nice solid engine case out of one of these engines...

The Type 122 industrial engine is a 1200. Type 126 was 1600.

You can't use them in a car without modification. They were built to run at constant revs, so the camshaft only makes power over a very limited range. The carb also lacks an accelerator pump, so it can't be used on a car. They would most likely also have used low-compression pistons for low octane fuel. Most industrial engines came equipped with a magneto, although some used a coil/distributor ignition. If it was fitted with a magneto, then the generator is just a shell to drive the fan; it has no coils/windings or other electricity generating parts.

The only reason to use a former industrial engine in a car is that the case is likely to have taken much less of a beating than a car engine, since it won't ever have been subjected to the stresses of a clutch and gear changes, which is where most of the stress on an ACVW engine case comes from.

VW industrial engines are just curiosities unless you have some kind of antique equipment you want to power, such as a generator or pump.

If it's seized its value is the same as scrap metal.

I worked for the roads dept in the late seventies and we used these 1200 engines on the watertankers to spray water on the road.
You are right fig most had a magneto and a engine speed controller.

You could probably recoup some money by selling bits off it ... if you can find someone looking for parts to restore an industrial engine. Some parts, like the fan shroud without heater outlets, may be wanted by someone building a twin-carb engine. I think jdt1976 may need some parts like the tin covering the exhaust.

Did you buy this off gumtree? I saw a guy selling 2 or 3 of these recently, misadvertised as Beetle engines.

If I remember correctly the cable cars at the Pretoria zoo used to be powered by one of these?
