Tyre rubbing on suspension
Is this rubbing due to wheel size being bigger than standard or something else?

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
It would appear that your offset is bigger then stranded.
Beetle wheel is normally center, yours looks to be Golf type wheel with wheel off set to inside of center.

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
welcome to the world of wider wheels...
If you go up to 15" or 17", then make sure you get the stick on weights and not the clip ons as hitting the arms like you do will move the clip on weights and unbalance your wheel.
That said, I used to have 185 wide 14"s many years ago and they didnt hit the suspensions. Maybe you can add spacers to move your rim and tyre outwards, closer to the fender?

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
Is it happening to both front wheels, or only the left front?
If it is only happening on one side, it could be that your steering box and tie rods are not centralised properly.

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
Happens both sides but left side more.
I actually want to go back to original rims and tyres.
Is the rosta wheel the original rims that i often see advertised in classifieds?

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
Original 15in Rostyles have the same dimensions as the stock Beetle 15in rims. Some VWSA models (eg, 1600S and SP), had standard 14in Rostyles, with a wider offset. But be careful, as I have come across 14in Rostyle replicas that don't necessarily share the same offsets, etc

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
Stock Beetle 15in steel rims are known as "smoothies" because they have no slots in them, like bus rims do. These rims were fitted to Beetles from about 1953 right up to the end of production, so are easy to find. Size is 15x4.5J; I don't know stock offset, but I believe they're all the same. Stock tyres for these rims are 165x15 radials. Rostlyes first appeared on higher-spec SA Beetles in 1975.No More Landy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2017 11:18 amSo what rims and tyres should I look out for that came on a 1971 1300 beetle to be originalfig wrote:Original 15in Rostyles have the same dimensions as the stock Beetle 15in rims. Thanks for that. Makes it much easier to look now.fig wrote:Stock Beetle 15in steel rims are known as "smoothies" because they have no slots in them, like bus rims do. Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
Best you can do is to take the tyres off, and take them to a rim repair shop, let them take the centers out and re-weld them in center of the wheel or a bit more to suit the car.No More Landy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2017 6:22 am Happens both sides but left side more.

Cost less then new wheels, and your old tyres will be usable.
Maybe be safe, and take the car their let them measure the off set and get it right 1st time.

Re: Tyre rubbing on suspension
I dont like the wide tyres or the current rims to be honest. I also notice the rear suspension seems lower than it should be so I would like to put that up to normal. Problem is my daughter does not like me to change her beetle as it means she is without her car fir some days.retrovan wrote:Best you can do is to take the tyres off, and take them to a rim repair shop, let them take the centers out and re-weld them in center of the wheel or a bit more to suit the car.No More Landy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2017 6:22 am Happens both sides but left side more.
