Re: Old engine spec help needed
I can't see the pics, but that engine number dates from May 1960, so would originally have been a 40hp 1200.

Generator pedestal part of casing. Fuel pump mounted on the side.Thats an old 1200, sometimes incorrectly referred to as "1100".
As Fig say, early 60.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: Old engine spec help needed
Any worth to it? running condition except for genny and regulator not working? Would this still be a 6v generator then?

Re: Old engine spec help needed
without opening it, you will not know.
It could be standard or it could be a 1835 or 1914 you will not know, as these old engines have always had fingers in them over the years.

Re: Old engine spec help needed
Those smaller generators were 6v only, unless from a Porsche. I suspect this car was running on 12v and has now damaged the generator and regulator because of this.
This is a 30hp 1200, as others mention, often referred to as 1100. It is not possible for this engine to be 1835 like retro van is referring too, not possible.
If it was fitted to a late beetle, it would have had no power being fitted to the incorrect ratio gearbox. Shame.
Only a select few would be interested in those motors, not much desire for them these days.
I would be interested in it should you want to sell.

If you have X-ray eyes you would know that it is stock, and just what Sean needs...
I would be interested in it should you want to sell.
Nearly got it, Hey Sean.....

Re: Old engine spec help needed
Pre-60's vw engine, dimension wise, dont have much in common with later type 1 engine. Bores spaced much closer together, shorter crank. After careful machining, largest bore possible somewhere around 83.5mm i think. 92's wont fit.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: Old engine spec help needed
Thanks Dawie,
I totally agree with you, was only using an example of how probable it will be that the engine may not be standard.
The 2nd post was just to pull uncle Sean's socks....
But the point I am trying to make is that without opening it you not sure what you find.
Like on Gumtree when you get an add that says " running well" you know its due for and rebuild.

Re: Old engine spec help needed
The number on the side of the generator would tell you what date the block was manufactured so you can check if the engine number is original to the block.
Day, month, shift and year.
18 5 23 would be 18 May (second shift) 1953
Another number (for the other case half) is located near the oil pump.
The two sets of numbers should not differ by much if they not the same.
