My 1976 Bay Window

Post by sean »

Here is a new addition to my collection.

Its a 1976 2L Bay, Strato blue with Mocca seats and door panels inside.

This for me is the holy grail of bay windows. It is the very best bay I have ever seen.
It has 33 000km on the clock.
1 owner and lived inside a garage under blankets in Beaufort West its entire life.

The chassis doesn't even have stone chips underneath. The paint still shines on the chassis and the rubber on the ball joints are like new. It is absolutely so crisp on the road.

There is more to this story that I will get to later, but a few pics first.

First view of it.

I had to source new tyres for the bus.

I had fitted a normal set of Continental 185R14's which are locally available, but decided later that these are not period correct for this bus.

So I sourced a set of special import Michelin's which have a much more appropriate side wall and tread pattern.

It is quite marvelous what Michelin has done. They have kept all their molds and recipes from over the years but have now utilised one of their smaller scale plants to manufacture only tyres for vintage and classic cars. Its not only looks, they are made with the same compounds as originally used as well. They range from tyres for cars as old as Model T's to white walls and for cars up to the 80's. Radials and Cross ply's.
