Pan welding - West Rand Jhb
I have just discovered that "someone" has hacked 3 sides of a 4 inch square out of the top of the main tube just behind the firewall on my new purchase (1963 1200). Why anyone would be that posting.php?mode=post&f=4# is beyond me, but I need to get this welded. Since the flap that's left is badly butchered, it will require specialist welding skills which I do not have (general KFC chiken welding only). Any recommendations in the greater Jhb area much appreciated. Russell. 0632502408

I assume that hole was hacked in order to facilitate the installation of the clutch cable. It was totally unnecesary if they followed guides found in most Beetle manuals, or even online. If you have access to a MIG welder you should be able to do it. If your welding is a bit rough you can always use a grinder afterwards.

It should be possible to make a little "door",.. just for future cable issues,.....seeing that there isa hole ???.
Other than that a nice plate welded in,...with a good welder in tow!
You have choices!!

you can fit the cable without cutting a new hole. It isnt easy, but it is do-able

Best get your child to do it because if you have small hands, it goes fast.

I have a mate Trevor who is an EXPERT welder...welded my Kombi's floor...and has done some pretty fancy work for me in the past. Inbox me for his number if you want...
Given enough time and money, anything is possible...
