Golf Mk1 Disc brakes as replacement for '74 beetle Front Drum Brakes?

Post by Gio »

Hi all,

Please excuse my first post. I am new here.

Question: I have heard that the front disc brakes from a Golf Mk1 can serve as a "bolt-on" replacement for the front drum brakes of my 1974 Beetle? (I would like to keep the original steel rims and 4 lug nut pattern)..

*Is this true?
If not, please advise on what disc brakes would fit the original 4 lug nut pattern (as well as clear the steel rims!).

Also, if it is not as simple as swapping from drums to disc... What needs to be done to the car to make run on front disc brakes?

Thanks in advance for the help...

Welcome Gio!

There are conversion kits. Just make sure about the quality of it. Also, depending on what actual rims and kit you will use, it can push the wheels out...it widens the wheel track.

I'm also interested in the answer to the original poster's original question: "I have heard that the front disc brakes from a Golf Mk1 can serve as a "bolt-on" replacement for the front drum brakes of my 1974 Beetle...". I know there are kits but say you already have access to a Golf 1 setup, would it work?

You use the disk, caliper and pads from a golf1 the rest is custom, simple bolt on, easier than having to set up drums.
