My carb had a very rich mixture and resultant eye watering consumption so I decided due to time constraints just to buy a new carb from a local beetle spares supplier.
I fitted the carb and after one trip it started leaking out of an external hole that looked like it is a plugged off hole, so I took it back and was given a new one.
Fitted the new carb and it ran for day and a half and then suddenly started throwing fuel down the throat of the carb after going around a corner and flooded the engine and would not restart until I fitted back the old carb and towed started her behind another vehicle.
Took it back to said supplier and got my money back.
I have Now taken it to Carb Center who rebuilt the carb and re-bushed the throttle body at a cost of just over R2K.
Anyone else try to use an aftermarket carb and have trouble with them ?
Still have to go fetch her and test her out to see if it improves consumption but am hoping for the best.

Re: Beetle Carburetor Aftermarket
If thats the original jetting in the repaired carb, it should be fine...
But if the PO has "adjusted " the jets then you may still have to refit Original spec jets..
Good luck with your carb.

Re: Beetle Carburetor Aftermarket
Thanks Herman
Not sure about the jetting but assume the guys overhauling the carb will fit whatever jet is required to get the correct end result out the tail pipe ?
The only thing that still puzzles me is that the owner that sold me the bug a few years back said his family member had increased the cylinders and barrels to a 1600 but she has the bootlid markings of a 1300 cc and the intake manifold and carb (31mm) are still from the 1300.
He couldn't go into any more detail as he was not a technical sort of guy and it had been done in Pinetown about 14 years ago.
I will report back tomorrow when I collect her.

Re: Beetle Carburetor Aftermarket
everyone who buys a new carb has issues with them. You are not alone.
Original and old/worn out is better than what you can buy new

Re: Beetle Carburetor Aftermarket
Thanks Tony. Maybe that’s why they took back two carbs without any quibble. Good of them to do so

Re: Beetle Carburetor Aftermarket
Moral of the story is, don't throw away old air-cooled stuff, if it repairable, keep it and spend the money to repair it
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.
