Chassis number explanation
Hi Guys, i'm new and still trying to feel m way around.
This is my fourth aircooled .
I am trying to find the date of manufacture of my Beach Buggy for patrs.
Can't find anything anywhere.
Previous owner said he had bought a new chassis.
I cannot find the chassis number on the body, the obvious place under the seat is blank ?
the number is AAPV027018030264
Any help appreciated.

Re: Chassis number explanation
Thats a SA Police number stamped on by the police clearance section.
It will not tell you anything about the age of parts, motor or gear box found on your Buggy.
You will have to find the numbers on the gearbox,
as well as the motor, but take pic's as it will help the experts here on the forum to identify them for you.

Re: Chassis number explanation
Hi Herman
thanks for the reply.
The Engine number is also a rebuild. It is a single port and 1600 according to the purchase papers.
I am going to remove the body at a later stage and will check the gearbox,
It has King/link pins which according to all i read is pre 67.
Wonder if South African models after 67 also had King/Link pins?
I had a 73 and also a 60 something, I redid the King/Link pins on one of them (1980's) but seem to recall it was the 73.
I thought that chassis number would be a Police number, Seems the number was allocated and the previous owner did not bother putting it it on?
Will post some pics.

Re: Chassis number explanation
All SA beetles had K & L pins except one year import think it was 65 and the 1302 and 1303.( the 4 wheel nut )
The SAPS will be able to tell you where to look on the chassis as its listed on the computer where it is stamped, normally near the back right wheel , but this is not always.
The experts here will be able to tell you when they stopped stamping the numbers on the back seat tunnel, this may help.
But there is not much difference between all the chassis so does not matter which year it is when fitted to a buggy.
Yes we love photo's and also a project thread so we can follow your progress, as we are all addicts.

Hi Herman
Thanks for the info, Internet does not give one all the answers.
Will be uploading Pics soon as I can, but i'm struggling at present.
Waiting for the Roadworthy to open, they are always helpful.
Actually will Phone someone tomorrow at SAPS and see if he can help me.

Re: Chassis number explanation
Got hold of the SAPS, they say chassis nr should be behind handbrake general area, no distance specified.
iv'e checked by lifting the Noise reducing glue on stuff(whatever it is called or is) and...i have found nothing...
i have a feeling a chassis nr was allocated and was never put on or checked.

Re: Chassis number explanation
This can not happen, as the SAPS guy stamps the number himself, and when done, records where he has put it.
The number id normally on a thick edge, or on a solid section.
The number is not big, mine on the Bay was made with 5mm punches, and it took me the hole day to find.
Mine was on a weld seam in front of the right back wheel, where the body is spot welded, and had to sandpaper the edge to see it.
But I can assure you its there.
Do not think that they will put it on the tunnel, look on the sides where there is a welded lip, you may have to clean it with thinners.
It may be inside the car or outside under the chassis.
good Luck.
