2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
Help needed please..
We obtained a 73 2 L bay window.. it came with an odd gearbox, we think as the number one gear is in number 3 position. Gearbox works 100% but its odd to drive with gear shifter in that position. We been told that its a variant gearbox. my questions are
1.Can this be rectified without having to replace the gearbox
2.Who is the best person that can do it
3.What is the best gearbox to fit to a 2 L air cooled motor.
We appreciate any advise and help.
Thank you

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
No, 1st is where 3rd should be....3rd where 5th should be but seeing that it is only 4 speed, it's under the steering column.

I guess the system needs adjustment.
You can never have enough Garages

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
Ok Obviously the dimple on the Hockey sticks are on Different Places
One of the Easiest Fixes could be to Heat the Gearshift lever and Bend it towards the Passenger side of the Bus
On the Microbus gear rod under the Bus it is joined with a Spline Shaft so one could adjust where you want the Gear lever in the Bus
Hope that help
Other wise the gear couplers needs to be modified

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
Are all the gears just a few cm moved over to one side?
Or are they swapped around left to right? Like reverse now on driver's side, third and fourth on the very left side? Is reverse lockout working properly?
Think with the type 4 car (411/412), the shifter (left to right), moves same direction as shift shaft. Type 1-3 moves opposite direction. Front to back all work opposite direction
Best transmission for 2L baywindow engine is the 2L 6-rib type.

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
(if 1st is where 3 should be and 4th where R should be)
It would appear that the whole lot has moved over to the drivers side,
which means the coupling is either back to front, or the 1st shaft is back to front.
Easy fix is to Put gear box into 1st, remove square head lock screw, and move lever to correct placement, drill new dimple placement,
Refit square head bolt and wire up.
OR the right way is to turn all shafts around one at a time till you get the gears in the right place.

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
Keep in mind that good 411/412 manual transmissions are getting rare like hen's teeth. A few rust free type 4 cars were already exported to the UK last year.
Many cars were automatic. The remaining more popular manuals were driven into the ground. Years ago most scrapyards dumped their last 411 gearboxes to make space for faster moving golf parts.
No parts from any other transmission fits in there. Input shaft have different spline shape, no replacement clutch plates available. The old one has to be rebuilt.
This transmission has to be mounted in a certain way otherwise life will be short. It can take zero weight on the nosecone side. Otherwise magnesium casing distorts causing gears inside to run skew. VW found this out the hard way after the first few cars had nosecone mountings.
All the weight is carried by hanger over bellhousing. Nosecone rubber is only a bump stop, there should be no contact. There is an adjustment procedure for powertrain position. Bellhousing mounting use shims to correct. Rear engine hanger also have adjustment.

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
Codes I must check
Just be careful when you buy
The 17/1800 Pyramid box do have 5 ribs as well as 2L
The 2L box ribs are Rounded from top to side
1700 box is angled like the shape of Egyptian Pyramid
Reason it is called the Pyramid box
just had actually a Client that bought a "2L" Box with 5 Ribs that is the 17/1800 Pyramid box

Re: 2 L Bay Window Gearbox Question
Good info from Bugger
So you have a 2L code CJ engine from a 1976 or later model.
Remember 2L have a bigger 228mm flywheel. 2L box have a different bellhousing, and different starter to accommodate it's different dimensions.
Flywheel might have been changed to an earlier one to better fit the 411 gearbox.
