oil pump ?

Post by Haans »

Gents and Ladies, Who can identify this pump and on which engine was it used ?

Gear width is 24."scraption" mm.
some say type 3,..... some say type 4 ????

Removed it from a type 1 long block.
Measurement to the tip of the drive is 50mm and base body that fits into the "cavity" in the block is 28mm,......exactly as "normal" pump.
"theoretically" it should increase flow by about 15% ????

I do not have the knowledge base,.... so it's over to you ???

That is a type 4 oil pump.
Beetle dual relief cases use a 26mm pump. Earlier ones had smaller pumps. Think WBX 1900 and 2.1 also used same 26mm pump.

Bigger pump is'nt always better and can even cause trouble if too big.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Thanks Dawie,....duly noted. it is a 24mm pump, but a Very good friend sold me a 28mm pump which is the front runner for replacing the 21mm.
looking to increase flow,...will not mess with the relief valves yet  .....only !!! after w i d e consultation!

Hi all, Brand spanking new 28mm pump in with a few "choice" words in terms of all the "blikke" removal.
Really battled to get the pump primed,......eventually after calling the "ghuru" Herman (Retrovan) letting it "soak" overnight,..and removing the plugs....I swung it until it happened !!!
Observation is as follow. Oldpump backing plate quite worn ! Indicating more than "normal" end float .
On startup, it seems that oil pressure is up by at least .5 bar at idle,...and the same at 2000rpm,.......not as much as expected.
Will report back on observations when out on the road.

Regards to all. Haans

Plain Day to all, :? .... New pump in ,...with less than favourable results,..... and yes, before I get hung !!!,....... I am trying to get as much milage out of old bones as possible !!
Therefore,... on a trip to Speedy's the pressure dropped dramatically to 1 bar at say 2500 rpm,.... and back to 3.5bar when cold starting.

Back at the ranch,.. out with the controller spring and piston,...got it out after some real choice words and found it to be badly scored .
it has been cleaned nicely as well as the face that does the "controlling".
But,.... I cannot find the std length of the spring,... as I want to have it tested !!! can anybody assist?

Now busy making "tool" to tighten up the plugs when done.

talk again, Haans

What are you trying to achieve here and what oil pressure are you aiming for?

1 bar at 2500rpm is not bad, especially for an old engine.

Whats the point of trying to increase pressure at the oil pressure relief valve if its just going to escape through worn bearings, crank etc?

Mornin all who read and commented on my "predicament",... after some more "tweaking" of the control spring ,.and a 1mm spacer and 25 W60 oil,...all is fairly well with Haans.
Startup cold 3.5b and warmed up the pressure drops to 2b at 2500 RPM and 1b at idle.
based on this we were off to George for the show !!!. Ran perfect there and back with no issues. Oil temp remained between 80 - 90C.
Up Gamtoos valley on the way back. it reached 100 C and dropped back to 90 C as soon the road flattened out
So I would say,... Old Haans behaved pretty well :hangloose:

Untill the next issue to be resolved !!!

Hi to all,... bit of feedback,... got one of those adjustable oil pressure thinghies in,.... had some different springs made @ springwell in PE.
Put the one closest to "std" back in without the "washer" with the adjustable thing.
went on a 120km plus trip,..... and Pressure stayed above 2b ..... 1b at idle !
so,...if ain't broke ......don't fix.
until something else goes wrong !!
