I need to sand all the old paint off a chassis...

What is the best grit of sandpaper to use?

I would reccomend using paint stripper on the chassis and removing all the old paint. Wash with a steam cleaner and then dry properly. Do not leave the chassis like this... paint with ms primer.

SAND BLAST IT. it is better to sand blast it clean than sandpaper it down, or use paintstripper but wash the paintstripper with a alcohol base after the and not with water, or else it will start rusting very fast, use a good bare metal primer like Duram NS4, after that it shoeld looks good

I thought of the paint stripper idea too, but it is too messy to work with..

That's why I would like to sand

no it is not messy. , depends on how thick you applyed the stripper, do not use to much at a time and do small surfaces at a time as weel, as soon as it stats to get dry but not completely dry then strip it of with a plate or wire brush, use proper safety equipment aswell, goggles , face mars, gloves, and overall

why do you not take it for sandblasting? it is less work for your self and it is good results that you will get from it

It's just a bit of a story transporting the chassis, I have a to hire a trailer all the time

I'll give the paint stripper idea a go, I work next to a hardware store so that's easily available

Forget the paint stripper it is going to take loooong, messy, the more layers of paint it has on it the more stripper you are going to need 5L will perhaps do 2 fenders and the bonnet, tried it before after 15L of stripper plenty scrubbing and one hell of a headake from the fumes, body was no whre near where it needed to be, landed up using a grinder with 80 and 100 grit paper disks to finish it off, so consider sandblasting.

I agree sand blasting is best.

Next best is wet blasting, which can be done at home if you have space. Hire a high pressure water washer with an attachment that fits on front of the outlet, that will suck up sand from a bucket, due to ventury effect. This works very well except all cleaned areas will start rusting immeadiatly, so a suitable rust stabalishing undercoat will need to applied as soon as the chassis is dry.

Not all hire shops carry the attachment so u may have to shop around.

For a hardwaring undercoat I went to Jotum and got paint that is used in the marine industry, which is much harder that any of the automotive type paints. It works---no rust, but hard work to flat and rub down.

This is after 25L stripper and it was still not clean

Eventually 40L at around R1800 for stripper to finish the one side do not use the Black wicked looking ones they are shit the seethrough putty looking are the best

But for your buget and accesability to equipment for you get those cheap round dick sanders that you fit to a drill Rui was talting about that works well

I'm going to be soda blasting the bodywork, when the time comes...

But for now, I'm just going to sand everything down with 80 or 100 grit 'paper
