Clutch cable - too long

Post by camperman »

Hi Guys! The following situation on 1963 bug:
Engine out of car. Now the clutch cable seems to be a bit too long as the lever wil let the wingnut bump up against the bell housing - i.e. not letting the lever pull back fully. This will be agravated by the bolt and nut when the engine is put back. Any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe cutting a piece from the thread at the end of the cable? Is this a problem? Maybe the wrong mdel cable for this car? I think it used to be a 1200.

Did you replace the cable? the wing nut should not touch the bell housing, the threaded end of the cable comes close to the bell housing when fitted correctly, but to see if everything is 100% you will have to put the motor back and see how things line up as the clutch tends to move the thrust bearing / fork in and in turn everything moves with it, the whole setup is spring loaded which helps when releasing the clutch pedal, what can happen is the spring snaps and then the lever will not return to where it should be. If the cable is old then it is about to snap as it's stretching a bit, replace it. 90% of the time clutch trouble is caused by the clutch cable. You are likely to go thru at least 2 cables before a clutch kit replacement, try to get a German cable Brazilian cables are cheap yes but need to be replaced more often.

The clutch lever was actually on the wrong way around. The bend piece was to the outside and should be towards the gearbox. This then lines up perfectly with the guide tube. I presume that this leaver is not bend on the newer models? Will try to get a picture posted.
