Hey Guys
Im new on the site and have a few questions. First things first like the site structure,very informative &helpful. Keep it up.....Now back to my questions. I want to know whether a type 2 Bus fronts Disc brakes will fit on my bug without having to machine anything? Also if I were to remove the the whole disc setup including the Upper & Lower Torsion Arms will it slide directly into my front beam?
You see I can get a complete front beam from a 1975 bus at a great price and I am contemplating doing this conversion.
If you could advise me whether this is possible or not?

If we're talking splitties, and bays, the only bus to come out with factory discs was the '71 ("bay").
...and only on the front.
No '75 bus' came out with discs.
Are you referring to aftermarket disc kits?

So I compared it to a bay bus in the Ultra VW mag and kind of guessed the year of manufacture. What I can say is that the discs looks like is was factory fitted. The body however is early 70's ,defnitly not a splitty,more like a Kombi.

You can forget about using the torsion arms they are different, and will not work. I have never done this particular mod but I have done something similar to what you are thinking. You could probably use the disk/hub and the brake calipers, but you would have to fabricate a plate that will bolt to the beetle stub axle to hold the brake calipers in place, the bearings is an off the shelf thing you will need to mix and match, yes it is possible you will never know until you try. Remember you will then need to get new rims as the PCD is different as well as adapter plates for the rear.

...then you are speaking of a '71 "baywindow" bus.
No other 'early' bus' came out with discs.
Now afaik only the front came fitted with discs, this however I cannot vouch for. My "baywindow" knowledge does not yet extend that far. It wouldn't make sense to have put them on the rear, they weren't exactly going to be going anywhere near 200km/h.

AfaIk calooker, only the '71 came factory with discs.
I don't claim to be the know-it-all on "bays" though.
I've heard this claim from atleast 2 other sources who I trust with bus info.
I stand to be corrected though.
Care to chip in, Fig?

Disc brakes were first introduced on buses for the 1971 model year, and all baywindows from 71 onwards had discs in front. The discs were upgraded over the years, but all are interchangeable. It is also possible to fit later discs to a baywindow drum brake beam (68-70).
You cannot use any of the suspension parts from a bus in a Beetle, as everything is substantially bigger and beefier on a bus than a Beetle, even though the design is essentially the same. All baywindow buses have ball joints not king & linkpins. The only bay beam that will bolt straight into a split bus is the 68 beam, and it makes the split sit a few centimetres higher in front.
