Small update.

Got a nice add-on for the car today from BAB, all the way from VWSA home country - PE.

Also managed to get home during daylight! Drove past twice before I recognized the place

So, I figured, this is the ideal oppurtunity to spend a little time on my 58.

First order of business of course, the new fuel cap.
The replacement was made to go over the existing. A) no cutting, welding, etc required, B) easy to go back to stock.
C) The original probably seals best.

I was a bit worried about the size of the new cap, these were measurements taken by yours truly, with nothing more advanced used than a rough outline on a piece of paper and a ruler, sent via the internet, to BAB in PE, who made according to these measurements and shipped. Fortunately it worked as planned

The new cap fits loosely over the existing, used the (very thin) double sided tape as was my original idea:



and it sits as tight as you like. Without damaging the original further, or scratching the new one.

Lets see what it looks like fitted, shall we ?

But since I was outside, and it was starting to become quite a nice night, perhaps now would be a good time to fit the " front cover" IMPI sent me.

Trial fit, mark the holes (they happened to align just about perfect with the marks already on the front cover - obviously from the original mould), dril, and in she goes :

The dirty "rag" in the pictures, is the original 51 year old cardboard trunk liner. I would love a new, untorn, clean, shiny one, and I know It's silly, but just can't bring myself to just throw away the original one, what the H is wrong with me ?

Wow! That looks a whole lot better. I think some hardboard cut to size and painted black should do the trick. Or a nice black carpet.

For mine, I'll be finding some interior guy/girl to cut me up some heavy duty vinyl and use that to cover the wires.

Finally get to participate. Ole!
Front bootliner can be made from cardboard. Similiar to the type that boxfiles are made of and then eiter spraypainted or painted with enamal paint. The fact that you have the old one makes the job easy as you have a template to work from.
Cardboard in large enough sizes is available from stationary or art shops. (Showbiz at Cresta is always a good place to look)

Majik has now volunteered to check for the right cardboard at Showbiz

Quick update.

Still working on the licensing. Bumpers should be back from rechrome soon - can't wait (also don't want to put any pressure on my friend doing the chrome , as he is doing me a massive favour )

Did manage to pick up something cool for the beetle.

On a recent trip to the Mother City I got some vent shades from Muderick.

They had some overspray on them, and I was worried that it might not come off !

Front (does not look too bad, but look carefully and you will notice the overspray) :


Some autosol (expensive but worth every cent) , some elbow grease, and a bit of time..

Look at the difference on the backside (was really worried about the back - which I would see while seated in the car! )

Speaking of the back side, the paper I grabbed to put them on had a qoute on backsides

Plan is to make the wood slats myself, and obviously also to have it chromed.

and two widened steelies that I got with the bus as well!
