So what is the future of the aircooled scene in SA then?
Less cars and the only people that can get involved are those with money?
You are making the joys and tears of making an ACVW inaccessible to more people that way.
But who cares right? As long as you get the return on your "investment". Screw the rest.
If you are doing up your car with the thought of selling it already, YOU are not an enthusiast but merely a venture capitalist.

Eben,

Same as the UK, those who want a beetle often realise that it costs more than a cheapy car. You try and find a decent bug for less than 4k quid. Like any scene, it's depicted by the availability of parts and those interested in the scene.

The one in SA is lively, albeit it not that large. Young people, i.e the ones who would be the natural choices to keep the scene moving, aren't exactly rushing to drive a 30+ year old car. They'd rather have some piece of shit like the citi golf, or tazz. Is this an indication of exporters or the fact that when you are young, you don't exactly want something slow and old as your first car.

There are still many many cars available here, it's not like 9/10 cars sold are being shipped overseas. I'm shooting a documentary down in Durban harbour and in 18 months, I've only ever seen a handful of bugs/busses.

To keep this scene alive, we need to have a constant supply of parts, cars AND PEOPLE to make it all work. I've struggled this weekend with my doors, there is no support network in SA to help out. Granted if you live in CT/JHB you might have it, but anywhere else and you are stuck.

That to me is the true power of any scene, the ability to call on someone more knowledgeable to come round and help. I've had cars fixed like that all over the UK, and Germany.

There are a handful of young people in this scene, but not enough :(

To quote what I heard this weekend, "The average age of people in some of the clubs is 80+ years old  "

Then again, a lot of the "old" people in the scene don't think that youngs volks appreciate VWs and some of them act a bit snarky at times, especially if you tell them that you have a modified ride...

But the thing is, almost every one that has a ACVW that drives it and uses it has made a return on his/her investment! the cars are cheap, the parts are cheap (how much do the equivalent parts on a modern car cost?), they light on fuel, and services aren't an arm and a leg. The depreciation on them, well, its opposite, they getting worth more and more. No matter what you do, provided you dont wreck the car or do stupid mods that aren't reversible, you will be making cash on the car. Saving money is the same as making money. Just like paying off debt faster is equivalent to saving money.

if there are new people entering the scene there are always bargains to be had! you not screwing the rest.

There are more drunk students and inexperienced drivers writing nice ACVW's off than there are cars being exported! I know, i wasn't a student long ago. and my first bug was a write off after a SUV kindly hit me. more experience and i could have avoided it, but it happens. cheap cars are student cars and student cars get wrecked in one way or another :( wrecked cars = fewer cars = higher prices. also equals more being stolen :(

Is there a ban on students from seeing the offered section?

Where did you pull that statistic out of?
I was a student and my car still survives and from all my student friends I know of one that had an accident with his beetle.
Stellenbosch has LOADS of beetles being driven by students, most of them aren't enthusiasts though but I'd much rather see them driving ACVWs than a load of snobs.

F&*$en boring!!!

I lost interest in this topic 2 years ago....

How many times are you MoFo's gonna hash this f$cken topic of exporting to death? Get a f@cken Life guys!!!! Been there done it.. Print the f&cken T-Shirt and move the f%ck on already... I knew this topic would come up again when this thread started and it only taken 3 or 4 debates to reach it.... Man you guys are a bunch of f*cken wankers.... :jerkoff:

Cant we have a more stimulating debate?

Like why can a guy sleep with 200 seatcovers and be a stud but a seatcover that sleeps with 5 guys is a slut? (even though she slept with all of them at the same time?)
Or
How effective will the Secret Service be with Mo Sheik as it's head?
Or
Whats the chances of having a sub section of the seatcovers topic where we can see more risqué seatcovers and then at least the anti-everything lobby will know not to go there as it will be PG18-21?
Or
Why does TV News list Brent Crude $ price when we don't even buy Brent Crude oil in RSA?

And then you bitch and moan about a nipple and the most beautiful thing in the world.... Pussy....

Man you guys are ANAL!!!!

bwahaha give me a break. As someone who has worked within the security circles for a damn long time, it's a running joke that anyone in African can use the term "security" and "service" at the same time.

Well any topic is better than to export or not to export or how ever you want to slice it....

I wish you would ban this Exporter topic and all sub sections there of Eben....

At the age of 42, I am considered a young member at the Crankhandle Club.

C'mon Vader show us some of your Imports from Brazil. At last I can agree with You this is a topic that when discussed never brings up any new answers/idea = boring.

I agree with James that more Dubs are lost to students. And more Dubs are broken up than what is exported.

Export a Dub, Giving it to a student, or Breaking it up.

Which is the most Evil, Eben.

Right or wrong. You got movement on this topic. :hangloose: :hangloose:

No one even posted about my green car or St Christopher. They either agree or dont know about it.

Get real Eben... This topic is as old as the site is and in 4 years what have we accomplished? Squat.. F*ck All.. aircooleds are still being exported, exporters are still screwing the public and all you and the rest are doing is talking about it over and over and over again. Like a cow chewing cud.... It's boring and monotonous... It's a waist of time and effort... If you are trying inform people then do a search and see how many pages come back with the topic of exporters... There are more than enough topics on this site dedicated to the pro's and con's of exporting how many more f*ucken times do we have to discuss it? 10x 1000x? and really how many people really give a shit any more? I use to until the topic came up over and over again...
Do I even care that AC's are being exported any more? No I dont... Do I care people are being ripped off? No I dont. Good for the exporter if he has found a niche market and is exploiting the dumb asses out there? If you are too stupid/lazy to do a search on the internet for the going prices of things you want to sell, then good on the exporters for taking advantage of your dumb ass.... Ignorance is no excuses... And there is no pill for stupidity, in fact you deserve to be bent over the barrel and f*cked up the ass by the exporter for your stupidity.... And you Eben and all your other "save our VW's from Exporters' bumb f*ck buddies are daft if you think you will change anything....There are more than enough topics regarding this subject why do we have to start another one and regurgitate all the same opinions and blablabla over again?
