jmvv wrote:Got to Petrus on Monday and had no brakes. Only an ominous puddle on the inside of the right rear wheel. Checked the calipers (four wheel discs) and noticed the brake fluid running out next to the parking brake pivot.

Seems the caliper developed a leak between the fluid chamber and the parking brake pivot (Thanks Goldwagen) The calipers were fitted about two years ago and normally invoices don't hang around that long.

Long story short....R1300 Randelas later I had a new caliper fitted. Hope he sticks to his house training regime now with no more puddles...
This is going to sound funny, but someone warned me a few years ago about that same crap when i was busy doing disc brake setup on my beetle, and they especially warned me about that calipers from Goldwagen. Nothing against GW.

I very nearly conceded defeat and joined the 'hate-of-anything-weber-36-dcd-carb' club, but since I could not leave my rat not running (call it mechanical sympathy, OCD or whatever), I had to figure out what was wrong. Eratic idling, miss fire and smoke belching, a real doomsday car. Anyway, I sheepishly put the stock solex carb back and sure as nuts, the boost diaphram tore real nice, so I replaced that with one laying around. Fired it up after plenty trouble, and figured that the faakin weber had burnt the inlet valves. So next step was to check and adjust valves, but even doing so, the engin still didn't want to run right. Had to get the revs way up before it fired on all four. Plugs checked, carb cleaned out everywhere, and then it dawned on me to check the dizzy. Here's the lesson to all - if it's not firing on all four, check the bloody points first! The points didn't open at all, but only started to open a bit once the dizzy would advance, hence the high revs needed to make it 'run'. Felt like a real tosser. Oh yes, and I got the rat licenced and transfered onto my name. Real productive day afterall. Sorry for the 'essay', but had to share my findings. Ps: I putting the weber back on, so no new club to join for me. Cheers.

Don't worry we have all done similar things. I've learnt the hard way to allways check the basics first.

Thanks for the encouraging words Mars67. So glad I'm not alone. Just reread my original post, and it seems like poor spelling got the best of me that time of the night  I did put the weber carb back on, and the little beast is going like crazy baby shite again! I feel like the first I was allowed to drive - any excuse to drive, even if it's just around the block. My two year old decided that the dicky seat is her spot, so I always have an enthusiast onboard :hangloose:
