Yesterday IMPI and I left for Johannesburg with an A4 and an empty lowbed trailer to go and fetch a REAL 356B shell with factory sunroof (or what is left of it!). It is actually better than what it looks on the pics, and will now be used in the next few weeks to make detailed moulds of certain areas for IMPI's project. It might even be up for grabs afterwards, but I'll let IMPI do the talking, I was only the photographer

Dsan, you took the words from my mouth!
Where did you find it, was going to say 1st dibs, but Ok, 2nd dibs then

Forget the replica Impi, restore the real 356! That looks like such a dry shell as well ! WOW.

Nice find :hangloose:

hmmmmm, IMPI, what would it take to take a mould of the roof ?..........the more than I'm looking at a removeable hard-top, the more I like the idea.

As for building the shell rather than the replica............you guys have any idea what you're looking at to do it? I think that shell is about 50-60k easily and it's missing everything. Stick with your guns armand.

An original cabriolet factory hard top like the one in the pic below might also become available for a mould - speak to IMPI

whoot whoot, will do. I have a fibreglass guy that can mod anything, so even if it's for a speedster or cabrio, it can be modded to fit.

FFF I also have a Fiberglass guy that can copy anything so that part is not the problem. The hard top in question was made for a cabriolet model and thus uses (I think but dont quote me) a standard 356 windscreen and wind up windows and the doors are also different.
the shell is extremely rotten except for the roof and possibly the rearmost panel where the tai lights mount the inner body which is what I aim to replicate is like swiss cheese and i will use plaster of paris bandages to get the approximate positions I will then make a mould from which a rough part will be made which in turn will become the final mould. the dash is for a lhd model which will need to be converted to rhd. it took quite a bit to persuade the owner to allow me to lend the shell and about R500 to transport to Orkney so this is becoming really expensive. LOL

I also bought a windscreen and a rear window and some other bits

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn, I want that licence plate light..........a crappy repro is like $80 before shipping to SA.

You're starting to get some nice toys there. We should talk soon when I'm in KLD and we'll talk ordering parts from Jim.

Like I said last night, I'm going to have a chat with Willem and look at building a hardtop from scratch for my application. Too much PT and cost with making a mould from an existing one and making it fit.

Armand,
I think a mould of a removable hard top can earn you a few bugs so you should do it

I thought Pine would like the Janis Joplin colour scheme.
