I think you should leave it as is as well. Its unique - a sort of half-pigalle, half-normal SA fasty! No other car like it!

When I went shopping for spares at Van Den Brinks couple of weeks ago, I actually left the fasty there for a thorough checkup.

The stuff that needed checking was not difficult, but I just dont have the time at the moment. So I took the easy route.

Went to fetch it today, and boy, what a difference.

Brake drums were removed and inspected, cylinders checked and two needed some work.
One rear brake hose replaced.
Engine got a service, oil replaced, tappets adjusted, timing checked, carbs cleaned and adjusted (dual carb engine remember).
Suspension checked and greased, steering box adjusted.
Starting problem investigated and faulty relay replaced. (She would start once, then struggle the next time, then start again without a problem the next time etc).

When I took her for a spin today, she pulled better off the line, kept up with traffic easily, brakes were a million times better! Stopped backfiring on the overrun, and the steering feels like a car, no longer a ship. LOVED driving her today, was so inspired, I went straight to the license plate shop and got her new Gauteng plates made, and fitted them.

This fasty is growing on me....

Type 3's are really very comfortable cars to drive, even in stock standard form...first dibs if you ever wanna sell

Took her for another spin today. She's sorted right?

Started first time, drove about 20km's. Went like a beauty.

Visit with my folks for a bit, try start her afterwards, DEAD, not a click from the ignition. Check the fuses, all good, battery is fine, lights are all very bright.

Ok, time to take of the right rear wheel and check that bloody starter. Screwdriver over the terminals, no problem, solenoid kicks in and the starter spins. WTH?

My dad managed to locate the new relay. Ok, no BS there , it's brand new, and you can see new cables going from it to the solenoid. all the cables are properly terminated in a push on connecter and none of them are loose. After wriggling the cables this way and that, she starts again. Next time dead. wriggle the cables, she starts. Repeat x 5. Eventually we figure out that one of the termination points going INTO the relay seems to be loose. If you twist it a little to make better contact somewhere inside the relay, she starts fine. Let go, no luck. Car runs fine once started, and even a push start in reverse, instant startup.

So that means ANOTHER relay replacement...... At least it wasnt anything really serious, just annoying.

It rained a little today while I was driving. Good news: the wipers work. Bad news, at 6V speeds. It has only one speed. GLACIAL. If we were in Canada the rain would freeze before it got wiped off. Thank goodness this is sunny South-africa . Despite the annoyance, still enjoying this car. Now I just need to hook-up that old 6V radio and we are ready for the next meet. If anyony has any RED Type 3 interior panels/seats lying around, you know who to call... Also looking for original style seatbelts. These are OK, but not perfect, newer ones would be appreciated.

And what was the culprit causing the starting issues, the relay? NO!!

After some more inspection and searching by people more talented than me, a dodgy connection at the fusebox

Now she starts everytime, first time..... If only someone had a type 3 roofrack for sale

I borrowed the car to a family member, and sure enough, the #@#$#@$ thing would not start.

Got fed up, printed the fasty wiring diagram, and notice: THERE NEVER WAS A RELAY!

With some help from the "familia" a new cable was pulled from the ignition switch straight to the starter, relay removed, and VOILA, problem now permanently solved!
Should have been the first thing we checked. So we learn I suppose.....

So after long and careful consideration, this fasty is now officially for sale.

It's a combination of having too many cars, and a notch that should be ready in the next few months that prompts this sale.

The bad on this car: the driver side door looks like it was resprayed at some stage, so the colour is not perfect.
Both ORIGINAL looking front seats have a small tear.
Rust hole under the battery, but repaired with a THICK piece of metal. Wont rust through again!
Smokes a little on startup, but I only start it once in a while, so I dont know if this means anything or not.

The good:

My uncle borrowed the car for 2 months, as a daily driver, and besides the original starting issues, the car ran flawlessly.
As far as I can tell the car is fully original, and in VERY good condition for a +- 45 year old vehicle!
All original 6 volt system, new battery, charging fine, lights, wipers everything works.
All papers in order and license up to date till June 2011.
The car also has a S license, so no need to do a roadworthy when transferring to a new owner.
Lastly but most importantly, and to me this is the big one, car has all the bits to make a full Pigalle. It has the correct dash, door handles, gearknob, internal door trim, etc.

The car owes me R27K as she stands. So reasonable offers in this region would be considered.

If I did not have a NOTCH coming this way soon, I surely would have kept her and done the Pigalle treatment myself, but alas.

I've seen this car before and it really is an awesome Type 3. I've flogged all my rides, so no more cars for me at the moment. Best of luck with the sale, this is one very, very nice car. No rust, never in a crash, unique history...hope is goes to a good home

need your help.
The 1st car I had was a 1967 fasty, and it still is my best car, till today even after having the latest Passat.
Now I want to get back to fastys, by having two, one fully restored to original, and one that I have started building up with original body with 1.8T motor, and full Jetta/Passat underpinning.
This I decided as there is a body that would otherwise land up being dumped.
Will be needing all your help, PLEASE !!!!!
But will start pic album as soon as possible.

At the risk of sounding a little nostalgic. I bought this as a daily for my father-in-law, but he never got to drive it, then out of the blue my uncle needed a car for a few months, and this was available at just the right time. It was with a bitter-sweet feeling that I closed this chapter today..... such is ACVW life.
