Where are all the buses - even though I'm out the country at the moment I'm still checking the sites and not much up for sale - I vote open the "for sale section" to all public then we can get more people onto the site and put more AC's into the hands of the right people. From my travels so far I have seen that events and reports on events is what is creating markets - thus if we can operate in the same fashion, and create markets then more AC's will become available to us SA folk rather than just the Pound Boys !

We're the only ones who don't appreciate Fleetlines. The poms have already nabbed LOTS of them, and we lost another one to Australia last week.

I also heard about a New Zealander who is in SA now and has bought 38 buses to ship back home.

Meanwhile, it seems that you can't sell a bus on this site, even at a bargain price ...

Oh, don't start on the forex power bullsh1t again...... It's just as expensive for them over there as it is for us over here. We proved that adequately in a much older thread. It hasn't changed since then.

It is however not so easy to stay hardcore when it starts hitting your wallet. Most "hardcores" here are just "hard core" when they are chatting on the forum. You see it all the time, good vehicle come on here for sale for good and reasonable prices, and it all goes very quiet, or it's: "I wish I had the money", and "If only I didn't have a project already", and "I don't have space", but in the same breath they're whinging about why isn't somebody saving the ACVWs.

Before you hit on me, I am NOT particularly hard core, but I do own 6 ACVWs, 3 driving and 3 projects. And I rent 2 garages and begged more parking space from The Fig (thanks again!). Plans can be made, solutions can be found. But not if you expect someone else to do it all the time.

This comment is NOT aimed at anyone in particular, certainly not Merlin (Nic?), so please don't take it personally, but feel free to put the shoe on if it fits...

I'm not in any mood or condition to get into a heavy-handed debate today Ron, but perhaps my point needs a little more clarification...

For the most part, I am a purist. I will go to great lengths to get the right original parts where necessary. Often this means privately importing parts from all corners of the globe. It could be as obscure as a little thingymajig that sits in a dark corner under the vehicle, or it could be a very prominent part right in front of your eyes. Of my vehicles that drive (soon to all but one), all are 100% mechanically sorted. Where there was wear, doubt or age - parts were replaced, repaired or custom built.

Most people would be happy to make do with generic parts and repro parts. If you want to do it right, it costs.

If I had to sit someone down and show/explain just what I've spent getting my cars (which still LOOK very tatty) into the condition they are, I'm sure every person shown would have a coronary.

I recently brought in another fairly small shipment of a few mechanical components and some rubber parts. The package was about 7 Kg worth. That little box cost me thousands - and short of a few essentials, it was pretty much just rubber bits and pieces.

So, when I talk about forex power, I am not necessarily just talking about the initial purchase. The vehicle itself is pretty 'cheap'.

When I am approached by someone who wants to make me an offer on my vehicles (not for sale, but I learn from the interest) I always ask them to give it a think and make me an offer. None have ever come even remotely close to their cost alone.

Restoring a classic car PROPERLY in this country is hugely expensive. Much more so than elsewhere in the world. Our location, currency and skills are not on par.

At Nic... There's no need for a big debate. I agree with you and I admire your patience etc in searching for the right little obscure piece... All good.

But the forex argument is just wrong, or at least way overstated. Lots of guys think that the Brits earn GBP 50k-100k per annum, that is just not true. The average wage hardly hits 15k, if that, so for them to pay the prices is just as debilitating as for us. As Dutch. Ask Eben. And it's no different in the Euro zone, ask Zero.

The average wage in SA cannot be compared to that of the UK, for obvious reasons. But the average wage on this forum would be a good indicator.
