Blitzkrieg what is the best way to stop them from rusting as mine have started to rust
Sorry for the hijack Brianj
Any and all exhausts are going to rust, there is nothing you can paint onto the exhaust to stop the rot ,it's just going to burn off.

I'll be interested to see how the temperatures hold out. I was told not to mess with the performance too much with a T3 cooling configuration as it is borderline enough as it is. I guess the external oil cooler will help a lot already. Keep us posted, will you?
Juergen has fitted the 4-1 EMPI exhaust onto my Notch. It looks nice, with a little U-bend sticking out under the skirt... Don't know how it sounds yet.
Juergen hates it...

I am not going for "Performance" just that bit extra Torq that will make the driving experience much nicer
The deep sump and cooler should be making a differance and driving style olso
But will keep you guys posted
Ron when Are we getting some Updated pics of the notch ?
The one coating that you can do to the Exhaust is have it Ceramic coated in and outside $$$$$$$$$ but it works

Man, you need to ask Esme... I just get to zoom through Somerset West every few weeks, usually in such a rush I can't sit down even. I owe Juergen and Esme a visit. Last time Es made a cuppa for me, and Juergen wasn't there, and when he came back I had to rush off again... If the weather stays nice for more than a few hours in September, I might take Rumours for a spin past Betty's bay and Rooi Els to Grand Slam and visit for a while. I have driven maybe 4 km in Rumours since the gearbox change out (Ja Pierre, I finally got around to fitting that 1300 box I had waiting...)

Focus people.....
So the motor will be stripped and cleaned in the next day or 2. I am thinking after chatting to Rui that maybe its a singleport, and have also been advised there may be complexities if I find a cw crank, as it will be for a 12v setup and may require more parts. . .
So I will most likely be keeping this very simple, with std pistons and crank, just balancing everything nicely and improving the flow a bit.....

It is single port.

Single port type threes also have 6mm studs on the oilpump and small oil channels on single relief cases
I would advise finding a late bus casing with the cover plate where the type three dipstic tube mounts to.
BTW the cw crank will work with a 6v flywheel it is the other way around the 12v flywhhel wont fit a 6v crank. but some type threes and busses had 6v 200mm flywheels
You will find it a bitch to find an oil pump suited to your casing.
With all this said mst early type threes had essentially 1200 casings modified for 1600 use and this lead to serious redesign on the part of vw casings were beefed up culminating in the dual relief casing
engines were made 1600 for the Type three
the twinport heads were seen in 68 first on the type three
conrods were made Essentially all partnumbers were prefixed 311 for type three use.
If it were my engine I would find a dual relief case
add some stroke 76 or 78mm with a cw crank
std cam
carbs modded with type four venturies and throttles
electronic ignition
balancing
30mm oilpump
external oil cooler
twin port heads and manifolds
This would give a very reliable engine which should last a long time and still appear std

Oil pump # 111115107 how many you need?
Ftting a 12V FW to a later 6V crank, it may fit, but....... setting the end float as well as the sealing of it, is the problem.
The bitch will be to find a good casing with cover plate where the type three dipstick tube mounts to.

This is the rub
most 6mm pumps have 17mm gears early type threes have 21mm gears but with bad flow characteristics
What is the specs on those pumps Rui?
the only real pump to use is a 111 115 109a which I would take a couple If possible it also has 21mm gears but fits the three rivit cam
Later 1600s had a 26mm pump as std

The pump I refer to has 21mm gears, flange is about 3mm thicker than original, made by shadeck. Doing a little blue printing of any pump will improve flow characteristics and will be much improved.
