yup..... 356A it is. Only in the states of course...just because porsche couldn't go up against likes of corvette and the american sales team convinced old ferdinand they needed something different!! The next coupe that was released was the 356B GT (1959), just about the first of the 4 cam c arrera's. Noticable difference was the windscreen which stood almost upright, and the slope of the doors was a lot more horizontal. Telling the difference between the actual speedster models is a bit of a mission though. They made the smallest of changes, different lenses on the lights...small tweaks like that!! And to think they only manufactured them for 3 years...kinda sad!

I know a guy with a few 4cam motors, and cars, I was selling a 4cam crank for him the the other day, a 4cam is a work of art if you ever get to see one...
PORSCHE 4-CAM CARRERA ENGINE AND RELATED SPARES
ITEM 1: Porsche 4-Cam Carrera Roller Bearing crankshaft complete with connecting rods, bearings, flywheel, pulley (Degreed) and Distributor drive.
The Crankshaft has been made by ?Hirth? (whom also made the cranks for the racing Mercedes Benz?s of that era) And is original equipment as fitted by Porsche to their type 547 engines and also up to and including the type 692/0 Engine.
The Crankshaft has been serviced with new bearing rollers and new Roller bearing cages. The Crankshaft is in excellent condition.

If you need to ask the price, you cannot afford it.
There is the story of the original 550 that was crashed in SA, driver was sadly killed, the family buried the car in Johannesburg were it is to this day.

My Dad grew up in the Brits/Hartebeespoort Dam area. He once told me that when he was young (late 50s/very early 60s) the local GP had an 'early Porsche'. Dunno if it was a standard 356 or perhaps a Speedster? This doctor was killed one night in the Porsche on the Brits/Pretoria road on his way to an urgent house call.

Well, could be another one, this guy was killed at Kyalami, I think Classic car Africa did a short write up about it.

BTW - I KNOW I can't afford a 4-cam crank, but how much did it go for?

lol...the beauty of the 4 cam carrera is summed up by one thing. Porsche had huge comebacks for crank seizures. Reason: their drivers weren't driving them hard enough. When pottering around, their oil feed holes would foul up and needed to be driven hard to keep them clean. Those who drove them as they should have...never had a problem

I had a guy once tell me that... was the last straw and I have never bothered to do business with him again.
Occasionally you may be right, but its a very bad attitude to have and you can loose a lot of business like that.

Likewise.
NEVER assume you know the buyer, and/or his/her intetions.
I can detail you on various occasions when I've either been turned away, or been given a cold reception because I look like a youngster with apparently F/a knowledge or cash, or have been given the run-around as above.
I remember, clearly, walking into a well-known vintage Porsche dealer last year and, with a straight face and intention to buy, requesting pricing and availability on a 2.5/3l a-c 911 engine, 15" Fuchs, and a variety of parts.
I got such a cold reception, and BS attitude...with a distinct notion of me being clueless, cashless, and a troublemaker that I upstaged him there and then with a customer about his lack of knowledge, BS service, and my requests.
I walked out and spent my money elsewhere.
I may walk into your store wearing worn-out greasey clothes, looking shoddy, etc....whatever, but, and I know from working in service environments that often the shabbiest customers spend the most money.
Assumption people, is the Mother of all F/ups.

OK, OK!!
SO WHAT DID THE CRANK GO FOR???

Guy wanted around 100k + for it,
Was also a few other serious Porsche spares, including some 550 bits.
Merlin, go pay a visit to Investment cars, Ferrari or Rolls-Royce and ask for a test drive in an exotic , I can guarantee you, until you have filled in a bank application form or placed R500 000-00 on the table or prove you can pay. You will not even get the time of day from the Sales manager. (Its called qualifying) Same reason Auction houses ask for a deposit. Talk is cheap, money buys the whiskey. They assume all day long,,,
My point by making the statement was in fact "its expensive" but you assume too much...
Pine, did you know with these cranks you can not BLIP the throttle when they are cold, the Roller bearings skid and the engine will destroy itself in a few hundred km's
