With the help of my good friend Greg for towing in his Ford Ranger and Chris who kindly lent me his Opel Superboss racecar trailer, we towed the car from its current home in Pretoria to Tony at Volksworx in Johannesburg who is going to give the car a good going over, sort the brakes out, service and tune the engine, attend to a few electrical issues, etc, etc. Hopefully we will get her up and running close to 100% as soon as possible...

A few more pictures as promised, just with my iPhone for now but will get better ones with my dSLR when I get her back...

On the trailer ready to go, you can notice the difference in colour between the drivers door and body...

Image

Image

A whole bunch of detail pictures of the car and some problem area's...

Rear hatch rubbers are shot, as are the frunk's and will need replacing...

Image

A shot of the roof, you can see how poor the paintwork looks up close, nothing that some TLC can't handle though...

Image

Rear bumper shoing damage to the LHS...

Image

Passanger side indicator/park light, lens need some TLC to get the colours to pop again...

Image

LHS headlight and indicator/park light in pretty good condition but in need of some TLC...

Image

Front bumper with some considerable damage that I presume someone has tried to repair at some point, damage also to front valance and frunk trim and over riders missing...

Image

Huge crack in the dash, there is another smaller crack but this is the most significant...

Image

Pop out windows still working and in good condition, overall the window rubbers were in pretty good condition...

Image

Drivers side door trim needs to be replaced, a friend has one for me already and it looks like there was a radio in the car at some stage...

Image

Hooter/horn doesn't work and fuel gauge is erratic but otherwise everything works electrically...

Image

Love the older switches and ashtray...

Image

Yep, its a 12 volt, battery is tiny though, anyone know the correct size...

Image

Drivers side indicator/park light is missing plastic and a bulb, will see what I can find...

Image

Drivers side door had rust repaired, poorly from what I can tell, the chrome trim is missing and paint not matched very well...

Image

Stock steel wheels with chrome hub caps and extender rings, hoping I can get some life back into the wheels and caps...

Image

Fuel tank area still looks pretty good...

Image

Not familiar with this at all, any information or an explanation...

Image

The spare looks to be the original or pretty close to it, the jack is still in its place but couldn't find any of the original tools sadly...

Image

Picture of the Reg/VIN plate, am sure it is a CKD kit assembled locally in South Africa...

Image

And finally a terrible photo (Don't let your friends take photo's...) of my ugly mug and the car at Volksworx...

Image

I still have to scan and upload the books, the most interesting being the original service booklet and a warranty booklet for the engine swap done by VW in 1979. The car is at my mechanic at the moment, he is going to give everything the once over and see what needs to be replaced, renewed, serviced, cleaned, etc. both mechanically and electrically. Unfortunately, for soem strange reason when he took teh car for a drive on Fri afternoon she was running on 2 cylinders so at best it may just be an electrical or carb issue and at worst a compression issue meaning we will have to strip and rebuild the engine...

And just for kicks, a Diptic creation...

Rubbers - Go to pro auto rubbers with a sample, they have frunk and boot rubbers that match the original profile.
Wheel caps and trim rings - Use some Prepsol, wash them down, polish with that Meguiars metal polish or Autosol. You'll be amazed at how good OG chrome is. Likewise for the bumpers.

Nice car dude, can't wait to see it!

Thanks, she's a bit rough around the edges but I love the character of original paint, dents, nicks and scratches and stories they tell...
Same problem for me at work! :(
Just curious what site did you use for the photos?
Will have to look tonight from home! :)

Thanks Ilyaas :D I see a lot of work cleaning her up after Tony has sorted her mechanically and then getting down to replacing and refurbing whatever needs to be done...

P.S. Where is Pro Auto Rubbers?

Spoke to my Tony at Volksworx yesterday afternoon and the news was better than I had hoped for :D The engine is in a generally good condition with the spark plugs and leads causing the 2 cylinder running issue but she does need a damn good service, new exhaust and carb service. As I suspected she needs a serious brake overhaul meaning new wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake hoses, etc. and new tie rod ends up front. Luckily a lot of the stuff is available locally but I will need to get the wheel and master cylinders imported as I had to for our Bus.

Looking at VW Heritage Parts in the UK, is there anywhere else I can look?

Type 3 Detectives in the UK.

But locally, try Dave Rowley at Flat4Racing in Cape Town. Calooker (Rui) also imports stuff, he also seems to come up with anything and fast, judging by comments on this forum...

Here is a colour pamplet that i have taken pics of, not sure if it helps. Yours looks like a darker grey. But they could of had different colours for different years.
