im thinking of doing that in my '71 beetle. what are all the costs involved, engine, adaptor plate, radiator? do i use the beetles starter? also im thinking of making it carb for a while till i get the cooling sorted out. is it difficult to do? the mountings etc. All help would be greatly appreciated

haha luckily im still young and no kids yet. i live in bloem and drive a 71 1300 beetle. it runs great and the engine is still in good nick but i want somethimg with a bit of kick that wont break the bank. my local supplier of parts and advice isnt one for WC beetles and he will try and talk me out if it, only so that I buy one of his recon 1600's for R14000. so im thinking of getting the engine to start with to get things rolling. the engines in bloem are more expensive then the ones in jhb but if im lucky and can go up and buy one with all the adaptor plates and flywheels and everything else i need. as i said im not sure about the starter, clutch, mountings and what radiator to use. thanks for the friendly reply! appreciate it!

I'm no strager to doing conversions, buzy putting a 2jz supra mtr into my bmw now
Did all the work myself
Got the motor from boston japtech for 4500
Got the kit from steward from syncro hospital, very nice and helpfull guy.
It made by gilo's engineering and consists of an adaptor plate, flywheel, crossmember, and mounting brackets.
It uses the vw 2L- 2.1L starter and the 2.1 280mm clutch
Mine is the 2L gearbox, 9rib 091, if I'm not mistaken.
I'm running a tbo management system with the std 60-2 cranksensor on the agg 2L, with waste spark ignition system, then you don't use the distributer.
The bus used to be n 3L v6 so radiator was alredy up front, its a custom unit with boath pipes at the bottom.
Now and then the v6 used to have cooling problems, but that's distant history now. Never goes over 85deg
All and all the cost was about 15k for the conversion, without the ecu.
Have not checked top speed so far, but it went 140 no problem. ill estimate a 160-170.
The little 2L engin really impressed me, its got plenty of grunt down below.
I think in a small beatle it wil be great fun! Specially with n 268deg cam.

How much more power does the 2L have than the 1.8L? Will it be worth it to put a 1.8L in? Has anyone got a 1.8L in their beetle?

I got a 1800 8V carb engine in my beetle and the power is amazing. So much better than stock!

awsome the 2l will probably be better but the 1.8 has already got the correct waterpump pulley for when you remove the a/c and p/s. Does the 1.8 use the sam adaptor plate and flywheel as the 2l? what starter must i use?

Personaly, I would not fit a radiator in the back. Too little airflow.

I've been checking the fuel comsumption on the 2L the past week or 2.
Got between 7 and 7.5 kpl in town use to work and back, with the v6 I got 5kpl!
Have not yet got a open road to check top end speed.
Yes the 2L and 1800 use the same bolt pattren on the gearbox side, even the 1600, 1400 all the same, just flywheel and clutch size that's

thanks ricky, just looked like an easier way but i cant think that, that car would stay cool. thats awsome for a 2l! cant wait to get mine started, would take about 3 months to get all the parts as funds are limited... but im super excited!

In carb form, the 1.8 golf engine is around 70kw and the 2.0 around 75+ kw, and torque is also somewhat higher on the 2.0, I cant remember the figures exactly, but I would guess the 1.8 is around 150nm and the 2.0 around 170nm.

thanks golfmad! a friend of mine said that the 1.8 revs higher and quicker than the 2L, not sure if its true or not. he said the 1.8 parts are also cheaper as the 2L is a import motor??

To be honest, the 2.0 as an import is more readily available than the 1.8.

I had MK3 Gti with the 2.0 engine and it wasnt scared to rev to 6500 rpm,(with decent cam) just like the 1.8. The MK3 golfs and jettas all used either the 2E or the ADY in later models (1996-1998) Gti and Cli, so local spares are readily available. I am not dissing the 1.8, as personally I think it is the best between both worlds, as it has lekke power and likes to rev, and fuel efficient more than the 2.0.

As far as parts are concerned - they basically the same - Goldwagen has every and anything you need for both engines with little difference in prices.
