You heard that from someone who's either F'ed up their Solex, worn it out or hasn't figured out how to tune it. "Better" is a matter of perspective.
Most single carb' swops were explained away in a similar 'Solex is shit' fashion to me, seemingly always by those who had little clue how to adjust any thing other than their crotch.

My solex 31 pic on my 1600 single port works great no trouble at all adjusted perfectly using a 2.1 electronic dual advance dizzy .
My dad tuned mine ,used to work for a vw beetle place years ago .

Reliability-wise, there's absolutely nothing wrong with an original Solex.
With regards to fuel economy and performance, pick one; you can't have both.
There is modicum of truth in better fuel economy if you run a well-suited and well-adjusted pair of carbs on an acVW engine, typically twin-throats, but, nobody runs duals and breathes on the throttle.
The only other carb' option is progressive, and I have not personally heard, read or experienced joy with any of them.

you are right about the solex very reliable just make sure your fuel tank and lines are
clean and free of rust.personally i have had no problems with my solex
great power and performance . Dont believe every thing you hear
