Howzit,
Based on what Tony said, and you're saying, it does however sound like there could be a overheating issue.. If you can't touch the Distributor for more than 3 seconds after a drive of about 1 Km, there's def something wrong.. Tony? Can you add more on to this? :?

I'll be honest, I have never tried holding the dizzy while running to see how hot it gets. So no comment here...
but dont forget, its shaft gets splashed with 100deg oil, so it will likely be pretty warm

But is this not the same as the Dipstick test? Are you not trying to measure how well the oil circuit is flowing\not flowing? If the Dizzy's very hot to the touch, then Id say so would the dipstick be possibly?

Possibly. But dont forget, the dizzy spins, uses energy and has energy flowing through it. This all provides heat as a byproduct.
Tubs has an issue with the car cutting out after a short while. One of the causes might be a coil that is on its way out. That is what I am hoping he can check. If the coil gets flippen hot and to the point the juices start flowing out, then its dead. It should run warm, not hot.
Touching the dizzy wont tell you anything about the coil.

It is possible that the engine is so hot that it is boiling the fuel in the carb and thats why he cant drive anymore. But at that point, the engine smells hot and he hasnt mentioned this. Its pretty obvious when it is that hot.

@ Tony z thanks for the pic I haven't had a chance to run her to check the temp of the actual coil yet. He bolts on the fuel pump however where fairly loose already.

@acpaterson after reading your concern of her over heating I did a check over and under and this is what I found, please see below pic

Big hole in the exhaust. Which I am sure was causing her to over heat.
I have now welded her up and going to get a few gaskets and spares before I reconnect and start her up.

If the problem persists I will then test the coil.

Good luck.. I kind of trust Tony 110%, but am just thinking "parallel" with him.. thats why I thought he might be onto something re: the oil temp. These are VERY robust motors, and can run even if there are some serious issues. I don't understand why yours is dying, I'm thinking mechanically that can't really happen, but possibly you might have an electrical failure, maybe your coil is breaking down when it gets warm, or a issue inside your Distributor. Hope you find the issue..

Welcome and congratz Jarrod. cool looking bus you have there. Hope you come right with the heating issues. wish I still lived in ZN, but will have my aircooleds down soon enough for a bit. There is a gentleman in Hillcrest Waterfall area also that is awesome at aircooled repairs. I have added you to the Aircooled Whatsapp group.
