Re: 1965 Kombi - ex Aliwal North Ambulance
Thanks, Addiction is a bitch,
Started at one..........The fastback as that was my 1st bought car with my 1st few pay cheques and years of payments.
Then the Split bus, as I always wanted one...
Then the Beetle, I needed a Beetle as that was my 1st owned car but was given to me as a gift from the guy that drove that 1965 Beetle from Germany down Africa to Johannesburg, and could not take it back.
So the Beetle had to be a 1952 as that is my birth year, looked for years for one.
The Bay was a moment of weakness as I liked the drive the Brazilia had but due to rust had to be scraped.
But yes would give my Right one for that Ambulance you have, Sorry Left one went for the 1952 Beetle....
Thats one mighty fine Bus you have, look after it.

Haha Herman, I would have thought they'd both be gone with the split '52!retrovan wrote: Sat Apr 22, 2017 10:35 am But yes would give my Right one for that Ambulance you have, Sorry Left one went for the 1952 Beetle....![]()

Re: 1965 Kombi - ex Aliwal North Ambulance
This is a current day picture of the Aliwal North VW dealership where the Ambulance was delivered - fantastic people to deal with.
This dealer sticker has been one of the best clues to helping piece things back. Until now the delivery date remains sometime between August 1964 and May 1965...

Hi All
This plate was also in the bus, it doesn't seem to fit any bolt holes. Would anyone know what it relates to? Perhaps a government number?
Cheers
Tom

CDL was registration for a small town called "Maclear". In the eastern Cape province, near border of what used to be Transkei.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

From Aliwal North in an eastern direction R58 road goes via Lady Grey, Barkley East, to Eliott. Then you turn towards Ugie, and next town Maclear.

I have a Ultra VW may 2006 magazine which features a 1962 ambulance in Europe it has 19000kms on the clock and is fully kitted out. Only problem is you are a bit far out of town to send it to you.

Thank you Dawie, great to know. I am wondering if this is a red herring? Time will tell.Dawie wrote: Sun Apr 23, 2017 2:59 pm CDL was registration for a small town called "Maclear". In the eastern Cape province, near border of what used to be Transkei.

Thanks all the same Terry, I'll might even have a copy in my stash or I'll try track one down. It is also amazing what pics Google brings up.Terry Phillips wrote: Sun Apr 23, 2017 3:30 pm I have a Ultra VW may 2006 magazine which features a 1962 ambulance in Europe it has 19000kms on the clock and is fully kitted out. Re: 1965 Kombi - ex Aliwal North Ambulance
Battery tray has been done, along with a few other things like: new front window rubbers, new wiper, wiper seals, pedal seals, shifter bush, shifter coupler, cargo door handle blah blah...
Discovered the impossible task of colour matching when not a full resto. The battery tray and hinge colours aren't 'the best' but I am just so keen to get it on the road, I can come back to them if they bother me too much.
Engine tinwear is at the powder coaters so hopefully it won't be too much longer until it is fired up.

Thanks Jolas, I love to sign writing too!
Does anyone have pictures of how the horns/sirens should mount? The anti vibration brackets I have are too short to reach the bumper bracket or the holes I have in the bumper.
