This is my factory CI Kamper spelt that way. It is a 4 sleeper with canvas sides not the old fold out wooden popup sides. My one was converted to fiberglass roof and canvas sides
. I fitted one of Seans favourets a Toyota 3CT not fast 120kph but good power and good on fuel and if you go up north always find diesel every thing there is diesel. It does need a paint job as a camper it has spent most of its life camping and in the sun but very good on fuel and plenty powerklitts://postimg.cc/image/7ydn7kk2z/][/url]

Some improvements have been made to the Syncro.

First was to restore the wheels back to the standard silver. Then threw off the budget tyres and fitted a nice set of all terrain BF Goodrich tyres.




Next, the foreign engine had to go. The gearbox had also been tampered with by an "expert" which changed the 3rd and 4th gear. This was also a gemorse due to having big jumps between the 2nd and 3rd gears, so it had to go too. The engine bay had been raised to accommodate the Audi engine, so i'm glad this will be removed too.

Of course, an original engine had to go in, but rather the very special Oetingger 3.2i WBX6. They were only fitted in Syncro's in SA and installed by Lindsay Saker VW. 55 in total.

Out with the foreign Audi motor.

Well, here's the thing Tony. You and I, both know that bus came with a 2.1. I feel it's our duty, to insist Sean fit that bus with the engine accordingly. I am happy to assist Sean by taking ownership of the offending WBX6

No No, I have thought this through properly.

The WBX6 being installed in Syncro's was a SA story. It was not done at the factory either.

Lindsay Saker took 2.1i Syncros and installed the Oettinger package imported from Germany. In this country it was only the motor and diff ratios.

So actually, I don't believe you would be able to tell if it was done when new or later in life. The VIN in SA does not specify it.

Also remember that you had a 2.5i WBX4 Oetingger motor as well. This was the same as a 2.1i, but received a different crank for stroke and bigger barrels and pistons to increase it from 2.1 to 2.5. This was an offer on normal kombis as well.

So while buying the Split Westy, the owner happened to have this rather original and unmolested T3 1.9WBX panel van, or "VAN". Its also been living in the Karoo for many years too. I was able to make a package deal. Its a 1988 model, manufactured in Germany and assembled to Uitenhage.







I will head up after the lock down to fetch this one. Its in good running order, so will be able to drive it.

I'm glad this one can be preserved as you don't find panel vans that have been well looked after or that havnt been cut.

2 weeks ago I hit the road and went to fetch the Panelvan in Beaufort West.

Lovely open road through the Karoo.

I took the scenic route back through Meiringspoort and finished down route 62.





It was running, but it was on its last legs. The motor was tired and I had wheel bearings rumbling and later a CV joint that seized up causing the biggest vibration i've ever felt in my life. The only way to avoid this was to drive as hard as possible to stop the CV joint from biting. I hammered the motor as hard as I could and and at times thought I was going to loose it around the bends, but I made Barrydale and decided to stay over there.

Decided safer to trailer the last stretch.


Then it was time for a new motor when we got back. The motor in it was not its original factory engine, The farmer had bought a VW exchange unit some 25 odd years ago, so I decided to replace it with a well preserved block that has never had a engine number re-stamped. it was freshly rebuild to 1.9 WBX spec.

The gearbox was also jumping out of 4th. Apparently for at least the last 10 years and the farmer had been tying the gear lever up with a elastic cord every time to stop it jumping out. The entire 4th gear, selector and syncro was shot and replaced.


Then I had to re-do all the cv's, wheel bearings and brakes and can say its really driving quite lovely now.

Finshed with a good cleanup.
