hi Herman
belt not slipping,and i recently bought a new battery for the bug..so i'm puzzled..the slight wobble on the crank pulley was there but today it just sounded badly

ok..just checked my pulley and found that there is a slight play when i pull it back and forth...should it be liken that?

i had another look at my crank shaft pulley and found that my belt is in fact a bit loose,also that my crank pulley has a bit of play...i could actually move the pulley in and out a bit,therefore the noise....how do i adjust that play on the crank pulley?
I'd appreciate your advise

Sounds like the flywheel might be loose

First make sure that the pulley is properly tightened down, i.e., big bolt is torqued to the right tightness, before suspecting end float play.

Also check if the woodruff key is not worn.

Is the crank and pulley moving, or is it only the pulley?

Hey
I managed to sort my bug out, after i changed the fuel pump there was a small issue with the carb. Starts on the first swing now. But need to check the oil proper before i take her for a drive. Keep us updated on your end, hope you come right soon.

firstly i have no idea what the woodruff key is
i have taken off my fan belt to see whats going on with the pulleys....i found in spinning the generator pulley,there's a soft grinding noise while spinning
my crank pulley moves in and out ,slightly ...no sideways move...the nuts were tightened properly....so i am clueless

When a Aircooled motor wears out, the front to back movement on the whole crankshaft increases.
Now when you take the big pulley, in both hands, and pull back then push forward, this is wear movement internally in the motor.
If you jiggil the pulley, and it is loose on the flywheel, then the pulley has excess wear, or the key-way and key ( slot and wedge) that attaches the pulley to the flywheel is worn.
If you pull down on the fan belt and it slides on the pulleys, then its too loose, and needs shim's taken out between the two half's of the top pulley.

This is caused either by the fan rubbing against the fan housing, or worn bearings in the generator/alternator.

thanks for the feed back...now i know what a woodruff key is.
from what i read in your response is that there is some wear internally....there is definitely no jiggi-jiggi going on my buggy(shes a respectable lady)
hahaa...
i have taken off the generator pulley...only found shims on the side of the nut....the other half had none,so pulley was on its highest point.
i still can't pinpoint if that noise is from the gen pulley or crank pulley....
always appreciate your advice

i have checked for noises coming from the fan housing,but nothing ....the fact that there is a slight noise coming from the gen pulley,when i spin it, makes sense......but the noise is quite irritatingly loud when the motor runs
