Re: Looking for information
I got the Optima 6V (cylinder) battery many years ago that is still working fine.
IMO it is the best but I won't buy it again because of the odd shape. Also a sealed battery so less rust.
I found if the VARTA runs flat you can throw it away.

Re: Looking for information
Given all the issues mentioned here, and cost, I've decided to store my 6V components and run my 63 1200 Beetle at 12V.

Re: Looking for information
Thanks for this. Looking for a 6v battery now, best I have done so far is the varta e30 from BatteriesSa in Strubens Valley @1700Jdt1976 wrote:Donovan is right, its a June 66.
6V battery at Maiden Electronics in Kyalami, 011 468 1619. They got a 70 and 77 Ah. The bigger one is better, both same price.

Or get a price from Quality Batteries in Newlands 011 673 6702, but they will order one, takes a day or two.

Re: Looking for information
Just saw the registration. I spent some years in the Transvaal when my father worked at Atlas. If I am correct that would be Kempton Park.

Re: Looking for information
Guys, look at these Lithium batteries...they will be much cheaper and last for much longer...you can even place them on their sides. You will need two of these

Re: Looking for information
Wonder if the genny will charge those.... also size looks good. I just bought a haze gel battery for 2600... but the last one lasted 7,5 years

Re: Looking for information
I believe, for 6v it needs a constant 7.2v to chargebrianj wrote: Wed Dec 23, 2020 6:58 am Wonder if the genny will charge those.... also size looks good.....

Re: Looking for information
Assuming the 2-battery combination, I wonder if it could provide the amps to start the car. I think a minimum CCA of 220 is needed.

Re: Looking for information
I got that. So, is the 120Ah the only consideration in providing the cranking current? It might be obvious, but I just want to make sure.

Re: Looking for information
those litium batteries look good, but I suspect you need a charge controller to run them

Re: Looking for information
These are maybe an option too.. put 2 in parallel to up the storage. Not sure if cca doubles...

Edit cca does double...

Re: Looking for information
that is an idea, but....brianj wrote: Thu Dec 24, 2020 5:16 pm These are maybe an option too.. put 2 in parallel to up the storage.
look at the info on the battery
https://docs.rs-online.com/e424/0900766b81580e52.pdf
you'll likely need 3 in parallel to handle a starter
but
it has a max charging current of 3A - so 3 in parallel allows 9A charging.
Our alternators do way more than that, you'll likely have around 50A coming into the battery at full charge with the engine running
