would you be willing to lend the tool, or at least supervise while I balance my machine?

Just my 2 cents... Make sure you have a quality linkage and that they don't have any play that they shouldn't have... You dont want the 2 banks of cylinders getting different ammounts of fuel....

yeah, I know. The linkage I got is the type with the hex bar over the alternator.
The first time we tried we tried the "listening" method with the piece of hose. Man that was a disaster!
Then we balanced it we used the vacuum gauges I bought. But I guess thats no good either.
It never stops does it...

You can make your own manometer if you need to. They can be much more accurate than a Snail type syncrometer. The snail type is mainly only used to sync at Idle. The Manometer can be used at any speed as long as it is designed for it.
But the syncrometer is eaiser to use than a manometer. If you are desperate, I will send you drawings on how to make your own.

I also have that little item Eben refers to but found the Snail to be more accurate. If carbs are Synced @ idle then there is no need to do it @ higher RPM's, Jim, why would you need to do that?
I also have a colourtune seethru plug which I use to see if mixtures/jetting are Ok @ higher rpm's and recently got my paws on a CO2 machine but not got to use it yet, maybe with all these goodies I can finally sleep in peace when I set up a set of carbs in future.

I reckon higher RPM test might show you if you are haveing issues with a dodgy linkage such as I had..... ie. if your balanced at idle and it then becomes unbalanced ... you more likely than not have an issue with your linkage....

ok, so I checked my jets this weekend and I am running:122 main, 180 air, 52 idle and 33 pump.
That should be fine, but the car is running rich. Also according to aircooled.net my idle should be carb size*1.25, which gives me 45! Furthermore the guys goes on further to say that at altitude (which we are here in the highveldt), you should actually run it leaner. So I think I will try 45 or 50 idles...
what say you masters of the flat four?
PS. I am also quite certain that my carbs are not balanced, is there a shop I can go to to get this sorted?
