Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
that what i also want baby boost id want it more for the sound...bugger told me that you can build a setup like the bug he mentioned for 4g if you do most of the work yourself...do twin solexs improve economy alot?what i mean by that is,is it worth it to do the conversion?where can one source a complete set?

No but they do help. Its your driving style and you overal package that counts.dubster wrote:do twin solexs improve economy alot?
I have to wonder what this topic is about. You want better fuel economy because the price of fuel is so high... you want more power which uses more fuel.
Then you want to spend 4k on a turbo to make you go faster and use more fuel.

if all you want is the sound, then look in the back of the UK Max Power magazine and buy the little speaker and pre-recorded dump valve sound thingy they selldubster wrote:that what i also want baby boost id want it more for the sound...

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
My 2 Imperial credits worth is if you want fuel economy buy a bike or a bicycle....
But TonyZ is correct good fuel economy is determined by the way you drive, anticipating traffic flow, keeping your speed around your max torque rev range, moderate acceleration, keeping off the brakes (Bugs dont have a KERS Kynetic Energy Recovery System fitted) no full throttle driving. This form of driving takes concentration & discipline to achieve the results you want.....

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
the turbo thing was just a reply to chris's post and what i mean by the sound coment is that i dont want the monster thing boosting 1.5 bar...for now...just a smal setup that wil just let you know that theres a turbo in the back a.k.a the sound...eventhough its not packing that much of a punch...the twin solexs wil it atleast make for a smother drive...what improvements does it give?

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
just delivers equal air fuel mixtures to both sets of cylinders, instead of one bank being rich and the other lean like you get with a single centre mounted carb.
I personally would rather have a 1600 that has 90hp without any form of turbo lag, is lighter on fuel than a turbo engine when driven properly and sounds absolutely awesome. Ask anyone who knows the sound of a good twin carb setup (webers, not solex's). And then when someone stops you, you can say its just a beetle engine... but if its a turbo, they will shrug it off and some will prob ask why its so slow....
Each to his own I suppose.

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
but look what a set of webers cost?you can just build a small turbo setup for the price of the set of carbs...basicly its al up to budget...id also like to build a 60k na t1...but that wil prob hapen the day im a qaulified electrical engineer...what mean to say is that also want rub the potensial of a acvw motor in non believers faces...but for a quick high the smal turbo setup is the best option?id say running with a boss is good enough for me..

and i know what your saying a turbo setup is supose to be fast ...but a the end it you and the guy in a race it doesnt matter if youve got turbo, nitrous, ect.its who passes the line first...if you win you win and vica verca...but you do have a point...

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
I bought my webers for R600 in 2002. After I blew my engine, while working for Mr Delivery, I had to build another one.... R2000 later (incl manifolds) I had a 94hp 1600. It wasnt built right, but it worked for about 5000km before I broke a lifter... that engine screamed to 6000rpm without thinking about it. 3rd gear was too long tho.
Dont forget, you cant just strap a turbo onto your carb and hope it works, its not that simple.
If you dont have the money, dont start modifying. Its always more than you budget for... If you want cheap simple power, get a golf engine or rotary.... but keep it stock

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
It could make for an interesting thread.... Maybe one of the boys could start a list of what it needed for a turbo project eg. for a small setup on a 1100 - 1600 and then a mid-range setup for 1600 - 2.1 and then the wild balls to the wall, tar burning project 1600 - 3000.... I'm sure there are basic requirements to complete these projects like a car, engine, half a brain, budget, secret lair where the seatcover cant find out where all the money has gone.... And then you could expand on the basic setup to include more bells and whistles... I suppose you would have to start with a basicly sound SAFE bug/combi, disks, suspension blablabla and we could look at thumb suck costs....
What do you Turbo boys think???? Could be a sticky thread!!!!

Re: Turbo Charging an aircooled motor
my 2332 has been built with the idea of going turbo later on. Change the pistons and heads and I should be good for a street turbo, not a drag turbo.
I am terrified about the air/fuel ratio and inlet temps. Lots more research to happen before I start shopping for bits.
