Just a quick update. I tested the starter mortor and it works!
I am gonna be shopping for quotes to get the starter reconditioned. With that, will be sending out the carb to be reconditioned too. AND my spare generator.

So, if anyone in Cape Town can point me to the right and best guy/girl/person, let me know!

Mince why don't you fit & test the one you got from me and maybe get them both done. Maybe cheaper in bulk   Please keep us posted with the guys who you have it done with.. 8)

Well, I tested both actually. Both work. The one I am getting repaired has a weird bearing sound.
Been getting quotes for one to be repaired. Gotta watch my costs here.

Got a quote of R850 for the carburetor

over the phone. When I go there tomorrow, they will probably re-quote.
Same day service too. Sounds good to me

A guy at work here, a low-talking dude (everytime he tells you something, it sounds like it is dodgy), called a guy he sends his car to all the time.
He will be checking out my carb, let's see if he can do it cheaper.
He also apparently specialises in gearboxes and has been working on VW's for close to 30 years and has a Variant

Work started on the motor today. And by 'work' I mean 'examine and determine what is needed'.
Got the carb back from being rebuilt. Looks sweet. The auto-choke doesn't work.
Here is the thing, the metal fuel lines lined up perfectly to the carb I used to have (non auto-choke), and now with this one, it doesn't. I have to put new fuel hoses to connect everything. So I am deciding if I should return swop to get the non auto-choke carb back.

Thoughts?

Pictures to come when I am on a computer.

Here is the carb installed and looking all shiney and pretty. Like I mentioned, choke does not work.
Like I said before, it is not a trainsmash that the fuel lines don't match with this carb, but it would be nice to not have to make something fit.
Also need to pins and whatnot to connect the accelerator cable to the arm vibe.

Image
This is what i mean about the fuel lines. The second point is on the opposite side of the carb that the current fuel line is pointing at. As you can see below the adjuster.

Image
Just a question, is this tab right> My distributor cap doesn't sit flush because of it. :?: :?: :?: :?:

Image
This indicates that I need a 'guide-tube' for the accelerator cable. Also shows I am missing the nuts/wingnut to attach the clutch cable to the box. So if anyone can assist with parts here for me, that would be rad. (Yes yes, call Grand Slam. But if you guys have parts for me, then RAD)

Image
Image
These 2 images show inconsistancies in the fan housing, on one side is a hole, and the otherside does not have the corresponding hole. Is this right? :?: :?: :?: :?:

Assistance from the carb guys would rock here. Will be updating my "parts needed thread".

Mince, The fuel line coming from the fuel pump looks as if it has seen better days. I would replace it or you just have to cut off the nipple off the pipe and use a flexable fuel line from the carb to the pipe. Later models used them from the pump to the carb.
I have another carb that you could take the elec choke off and see if it works.
The other outlet looks as if it is used with a vacum advance distributor and this maybe able to be caped off.
Reverting back to the manual carb would mean that you would need to insert a choke tube and cable brom front to back inside the tunnel, and you may need to drop the front suspension to get to the access plate at the front.
Yes you need the acelerator extension tube that goes through the fan housing and there should only be the one hole that lines up the carb with the cable. (also one for choke cable) The rear tin should also have a hole in it for the same purpose.
I think the wing nut is a standard thread and should be available.
I would ask the carb guys who did the carb for the accelerator cable / carb bits, and should also be available from most car part places.
Your distributor should have 2 clips that keep the cap on.

Comments are off the top of my head at the moment but take better advice for those in the know. :D

Would rather modify the pipe because I don't want to lose it. Keeps it looking more original than a new hose/pipe.
What we were gonna do anyways.
Bushpig wrote:I have another carb that you could take the elec choke off and see if it works.
You mentioned that on the phone. Must organise when you are available and when I am done moving.
Bushpig wrote:The other outlet looks as if it is used with a vacum advance distributor and this maybe able to be caped off.
The manual choke had an outlet with a pipe too, so I dunno if capping it off will work. Will probably have to modify that pipe too. (feel bad about cutting these things :( )
Bushpig wrote:Reverting back to the manual carb would mean that you would need to insert a choke tube and cable brom front to back inside the tunnel, and you may need to drop the front suspension to get to the access plate at the front.
Access to the access plate isn't a problem at all. So, it won't be that difficult.

Will call Es for a guide tube.
Bushpig wrote:I think the wing nut is a standard thread and should be available.
Will see if one of the wingnuts from my drumkit parts will fit. Would be rad if it did :)

It does have 2 clips, but that little tab prevents the cap from sitting flush.

Thanks Bruce!
