I am busy doing some planning in advance and I need some info.
Which master cylinder is the correct one to use on the bug? I have discs front and back. I was told the mc I have bought previously, won't work.

Don't ask me! I don't know!

I assumed it would be a Golf mk1 MC, but just wanted to confirm it with someone who has done it.

Splitfan, do you sell these? :zhelp:

Golf 1 mc works fine with four discs, or two for that matter. Bear in mind it is dual circuit, which is a good thing, of course.

BF the one you got from nic is the Long one with all the fittings to the tunnel side so difficould to access and spacers

I have fitted the Golf 2 short one with a 25mm spacer and did not need to modify the push pinn

You all know the story about the best laid plans, so suffice it to say mine are going the same way. I wanted to spend everyday working on the cabrio, but so far I have serviced the carb and repaired a leaking slave cylinder on the split and removed the engine and gearbox from the bay. The little bit of time I have been able to devote to the cabrio has made me realise how much there still is left to do.
I unpacked the spares to me fitted/installed.

Started with clearancing the calipers that were touching the discs in front and temporarily mounted them.

After fitting the calipers I drill and tapped holes to prevent the discs from falling off every time the wheels are removed. Still have to do the rear discs.

I disassembled one of the side mirrors to figure out how to mount it. I need to cut a big piece of the mounting away to get it to fit in the place where the normal bug mirror would have been.

All the hard fiddly work to be done. Takes ages and unless someone else have done the same, they would have no idea!

Like those disks! :hangloose:

I really feel ashamed that the last time I worked on this project was in August last year. (Fortunately) Work interfered a lot, which I am thankful for, but it also meant all my projects had to take a backseat. Besides work, engine problems with the Syncro, my normal daily driver, also forced me to spend some time on Ugly Betty (aka the Life saver) to make sure that she runs without problems. She obviously has performed this task beyond the call of duty.

So at this stage it looks like I'll have some time at home during March and hopefully at that time I'll get some more work done on the cabrio. The SYncro is still at the top of the list, but in between I should have some time to spend on the bug.

Since the last time the only thing I have done was mount the rear discs properly. The list of outstanding work is still pretty long.
1. Install master cylinder and find the fluid reservoir.
2. Install new brake line
3. Fit brake pads front and back
4. Fit crystal headlights
5. Fit stainless firewall kit and insulation
6. Tighten rear axle nuts
7. Fill gearbox with oil
8. Install gauges and sensors
9. Check electrics and wiring
10. Fit windscreen
11. Buy and Fit seatbelts
12. Modify side mirror mounts
13. Colour code and fit side mirrors
14. Fit door window scrapers and rubbers
15. Turn rear suspension 1 spline
16. Fit new column switches (indicators and wipers)
17. Fit steering and boss
18. Install shocks
19. Fit release bearing and guide tube
20. Fit Clutch and pressure plate
21. Fit Battery
22. Engine (Has to be built)
23. RWC and license

Some cosmetics I would like to add
24. Stone guards and kickplates
25. Door and hood handle scratch guards
26. Alarm and central locking
27. Sound installation
28. Interior lights
29. Pedal covers
30. Center console

So let's hope I can update this more during March with a lot scratched of the list.

While I still have time to change my mind, I'm wondering which gauges to install. I have a brand new set of VDO gauges that I bought from Germany in 1994. I was planning to install them in my first bug, but sold it before I had the chance. So now it's either the VDO 80mm tacho and speedo plus some gauges for oil press and temp and volts. Maybe I'll lose the tacho and have the original speedo recalibrated and serviced. The other choice is a set of Porsche 924 gauges in yellow and black which would go nicely with the theme of the car. I still need a yellow porsche speedo if I want to go that route.
