Re: My 181 - Kubel - Trekker - Thing
Tom, I need to pick your brain about tie-rod ends for the Thing. I understand that the Thing is different from the Bug in that the one tie-rod end is angled off 90 degrees. With mine being RHD can I still purchase that specific end from the states baring in mind that they are catering for LHD versions. The remaining rod ends I can purchase here in SA as they are the same as those for the Beetle.
Thanks
Thanks

My TieRods look like a beetle but once again the shafts are thicker.
Got not idea about RHD. Remove them, measure them and send an email to CIP1 and Thing Shop.
Both are very helpfull. Try get your stuff from CIP1. They are cheaper.

Re: My 181 - Kubel - Trekker - Thing
I had imported the ball joint not thinking about the tierods. Only while assembling did I discover that they were a problem. Lucky for me Dave Rowly had one set of tierod ends that he had imported somewhere along the line that fitted nowhere. They were what I needed.

Re: My 181 - Kubel - Trekker - Thing
Hi there,
according to my parts book only the short tie rod (threaded tube section) is 181 only.
The tie rod ends part numbers are as follows:
311 415 811C Tie Rod End, Straight, Left Hand Thread
311 415 812C Tie Rod End, Straight, Right Hand Thread
131 415 813E Tie Rod End for Steering Damper with Left Hand Thread
131 415 821A Tie Rod Angled Right Hand Thread
The parts books shows different options for the pedals and master cylinder for the 182's so I would have to say it looks like in this case the LHD and RHD parts are the same just mounted opposite in the two applications.
I had a scanned version of an intercahnge manual that can be very useful if you guys don't have it I'll scratch around ad find the CD it was on. If memory serves it wasn't a huge file and I may be able to email it to you.

If that interchange manual covers other aircooled cars as well, i'd be interested in a copy too...

GeeBee, I would be really stoked/pleased to get my hands on a copy of that interchange list. Thanks plenty. Are by any chance restoring a Thing too? Thanks for those part numbers, next I'll be hunting down a parts manual for the vehicle.
Tom, thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. As for CIP1 being cheaper, I agree. The Thing Shop I can't seem to get onto their website either.
Thanks a lot once again.

Thing shop had their website stolen a few weeks ago.
This is there new one.

From The Thing Shop
Several weeks ago we had our domain name illegally taken and it has shut down our website: http://www.thethingshop.com . We are working diligently to restore it but unfortunately the process isn’t an easy one so it will take some time. The shopping cart and the website were not tied together and we believe that no credit card information was compromised. Until we get our old site up and working again, we have set up a new site: http://www.thethingshop-az.com where you will be able to see parts and pricing but will not be able to place orders yet. Also, the new site was set up from a back up dated December 2008 so some of the pricing isn’t current and some of the links aren’t functioning properly but we’re working hard to correct everything. In the meantime, it’s “business as usual” with same day shipping for in stock items but to place an order, you’ll have to call us, toll free at 1-800-VW THING (800.898.4464), fax your order to 480-753-0688 or email without credit card info (see below).
Please also note that all of our email addresses went through the old website ( or ) so we haven’t received any email at those addresses in weeks. You currently can reach us by email at: . We apologize that you may have tried to contact us by email and received no response and are very sorry for the inconvenience that all of our problems may have caused. Rest assured that we value your business and the reputation we’ve gained over the years for outstanding quality and service; those things haven’t changed. Thank you for your patience - we look forward to serving you and please feel free to call or email at our new address with any questions or comments.

PS: For those of you in the Eastern part of the country, remember that this coming weekend, July 11, 2009, is Kubel Treffen East. We will be there as usual with a booth and product to sell. You can see information regarding the show at: http://kubeltreffeneast.homestead.com/KTE2002.html or through the “events” tab at our new website: http://www.thethingshop-az.com

Grubby to answer your question I have a 1972 182 in thousands of pieces at the moment.
Send me your email address and I'll get the interchane manual to you, if you're scared I can also send you a 6.2mb 181 parts manual.
Sorry for the hijack...

You Sir, are a legend! I'll PM you with my email address. I won't say no to any and all info I can get, be a parts manual or anything else. I'm on gmail so I think the 6.2mb should go through. That interchange manual will go down like a ton of bricks!GeeBee wrote:Grubby to answer your question I have a 1972 182 in thousands of pieces at the moment.

Re: My 181 - Kubel - Trekker - Thing
Hi Guys,
I just realised that Grubby asked about http://www.thingparts.com .
Do not deal with that guy he is Mike Basso of Things Unlimited fame.
He did a lot of people in, me included
I think there is still a stickie on the Thing forum on the Samba.
He by all accounts went through a very bad patch and is now trying to make things right if you'll excuse the pun.
However given the distances involved I would say you definetly want to go with somebody who has a good reputation.
Its a pity because before the troubles I dealt with Mike and he seemed a really nice guy and was always most helpful.
Sadly that was also the reason I continued to deal with him when there were already rumblings that something wasn't right.
I hope that this advise isn't already too late.
Cheers,
Greg
