Why is it that the aircooled "industry" in SA is so messed up?

Bad service, backstabbing, exporting all seems to be the order of the day :?

whilst trouble shooting a motor that the Vintage VW people had supposedly overhauled, I found, amongst other things,
some interesting stuff -
The short block and components seemed sound, but that was apparantly machined and assembled
by others.
The cylinder base gaskets had no sealant
some of the pushrod tubes were too loose and leaked badly
the cylinder heads were not sealing against the sleeves and excessive blow by was evident
the heads were flycut at different angles
no bolts /nuts seemed to be torqued to any consistant values
some of the crankcase studs were stripped or had bad thread damage
thin washers were fitted under some of the head nuts
scrap exhaust gaskets were refitted
3 different types of spark plugs were fitted - one of them a long reach type
the valves gaps were not adjusted
crank to flywheel gasket was made out of blik -- massive leak
no seal kits fitted to the hotbox J pipe to the silencer joint
But I must say that the housings were all very nicely powder coated, and looked wonderfull !
Cheers !

I gave my head's in on Monday to be faced. The guy told me no problem, it would be ready on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. This morning he told me that he couldn't do it so he sent it off to someone else. He thinks it will be ready early next week! (I told him I need it for Car's in the park this Sunday)
Quick panic call to Uncile Bill.
He phones up his contacts and sends me off to the South of Jo-burg (told me to lock my doors and everything)
The guy's will have my heads ready to collect by tomorrow. Thanks Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old Mc Donald's had a farm----- Hee -Hi - Hee - Hi--- Ho !
Thats a clue as to the name of the best VW engineering shop around .. Used to go there on my bycicle with my Oval's Okrassa heads on the carrier before I became Oom, and was still the disselboom of kliprivierstroom
When you deal with a firm for in excess of 30 years you sort of develop a sort of a good working relationship with them.!
Cheers

My car was standing at the Jacaranda Beetle Club. I must say that citp is kind of overwhelming. It is impossible to see everything. I would be nice if they could group all the aircooled cars together. The busses for instance didn't have enough space. They were squashed in like sardines.

The workmanship on this car is truly outstanding. Jan did a great job on the paint, and the green velvet interior suits the part :hangloose:
