What did you do on your car today?

There is Empi stuff that is good and bad, you need to know what is what, some chineese made bits are crap , and one allways needs to make a plan to make it fit or the quality is shoddy. One needs to rememger not to generalise as Empi sell quality German stuff too.
I will allways advise when ordering when I know the quality is an issue, there is allways another option, but one thing is for sure most of the time the cheap option is asked for, and in that case don't complain when you get a cheap, shitty quality item. Remember that you will allways get what you pay for, there is no such thing as good quality & cheap.

got kit from Sonny's. Ceramic heater on side of carb is cracked, but will reuse it. The plastic dish that the heater fits in I cracked removing but will fix with epoxy this evening.

So, I've set the points, have statically timed the car, and I reckon when I get the carb back on, it will start no probs. Will wait and see...

Well, it seems that golfs also have 30 PICT carbs and the gaskets are not the same - most of the rest is so you only find out when you get to putting the top of the carb back on the body...

And of course I chucked the till slip and mixed up some epoxy glue on the box, so in all likelihood I can't return it... bugger...

Wash the area with caustic to neutralize the acid, then with soap and water, don't spare the water. (the solution to polution is dilution) Use the caustic, you know what happens to your jeans when you get acid on them, everytime you wash them, the hole gets bigger! This only stops when you soak them in caustic, why should your battery tray be any different...

Sure for that R&G, am goin' into the city today to get the stuff. Might also get NS1/NS2 which Chris swears by ...

Just whipped the tappet covers off and put a spare set of pretty gold cadmium plated covers on with new seals. No more oil leak, lets see where the next leak springs from.

What did you do on your car today?

I adjusted the valve clearances on the Khaki Cruiser. The engine was a bit noisy, and VW suggested a valve clearance adjustment every 5000 miles (more or less 8000 km) in the old days anyway.

I have found the following method the easiest for myself:

- Put the car in 4th gear, and jack the right rear wheel up
- Remove the right-hand side valve cover (no 1 & 2 cylinders)
- Get TDC (top dead centre) by turning the right wheel of the car till the rotor points to to No 1 cylinder plug lead, and the timing marks are aligned
- Adjust the No 1 cylinder valve clearances intake and exhaust b.m.o a feeler gauge and flat screwdriver (the Type 3 bible says 0.1mm or 0.04 inch)
- Re-check the clearances after the 13mm nut is tightened
- Turn the right rear wheel 180 degrees backwards
- Repeat the procedure on the No 2 cylinder
- Close the right valve cover
- Lower the car, and jack the left side up
- Turn the left rear wheel 180 degrees backwards again (or till the rockers are not moving)
- Repeat the process with the No 3 (left front) and 4 (left rear) valves
- Close the valve cover, lower the car
- Take the car for a test drive and check for (new) oil leaks on the valve cover gaskets

After I followed the above procedure this morning, the engine is noticably more quiet and has a definite increase in power!

Sat morning got the DC out of hiding and removed the motor that had no more vroem vroem in it The Vrou was the appy and things went quite well I wanted to install the 2nd hand motor that I managed to source for the DC But could not find Engin mountings close by

so will rather have the Flywheel scimmed and get some mountings in the week to re install the 1.9WBX motor

I have those mountings for you Pierre, if it's the ones that attach to the engine mount that bolts onto the casing. Not that clued up with WBXs... Will see if i can find them and take some pictures...

BF I swopped the 1C Toyota Diesel motor and Bell housing that I had for a 2nd hand motor that a friend of mine had laying around for a baywindow bus
I also have not had a chance to get Betty sorted are driving her a bit to get more KM on but mostly just around here the oil temp has not gone past 80 yet show you the short distances but she is a bit shitty to drive but getting to know how
I will be checking the timing as that might be not right which can cause the hard start and flat spots but then after that I will visit SP again

Blitz I need those mountings Quite urgent have a look and let me know I will be hunting ones close by aswell
Give me a miss call when you got them

I will also phone one of my other suppliers tomorrow that is close by
