Man, we're going to have to have another Melkbos social, starting with a short drive through Melkbos and the surrounds and finishing at the Blue Peter (which I believe is closed for renovations right now). I've been to the Fireman's Arms, in fact, my tie hangs there after it was cut off. If they are still hanging there, haven't been there for about 10 years...

What was the place where they had the superb Eisbeins? Remained men-only for long after the emancipation of all the other pubs, like well into the 80s, maybe even the 90's? It was owned by a Portugese fellow or family more likely, so we drank tempies (??) you know, red wine and coke... Yuk! Jees, that's a lotta beer ago. I believe the place closed some time ago...

Good news my bus is on its way to JHB. My dad could not get the damn thing road worthy but he could get a 3 day permit. So now he is driving it up over the next two days.

Just a question. The licensing department told him the he can register it as a classic or something then we dont need to comply to new regulations? Any one know about it. Apparently you have to justify that you want to restore it authentically then it does need to comply to new safety features. And you licensing fees are much less. Any one know the process?

Finally I was on leave for a week. My Dad did drive my bus up to JHB. SO now it is near and all the work can begin. Here is some foto's as the sanding filling an prep-ping has begun.

I cannot believe how clean and rust free this bus is. She should go for final paint by the end of the month.

Here is a updated pic of Flossie. She will be going for her roadworthy within the next week then she is legal.

he he he he not this one maybe the next one. This one is just to original As it stands there nothing has been replaced. I am waiting for some nice parts to replace old worn items but for the rest it original.

I wonder if someone can shed light on my bus as there is some interesting detail that does not make sense.

1. My bus is a kombi it is supposed to have been one colour only. But I have the original invoice for the bus they owner waited 9 months to get his bus and it was in the 2 tone colour it is now. I have been told that it could not have been.

2. Behind the drivers seat in the front the Bulkhead(I think that is what they call it) is strait and does not have the bulge to put the spare wheel in there like all the other buses I have seen.

I got the bus from the original owner and he said it was a kombi but with the deluxe paint scheme.

Like I said in previous posts as well the bus was in such a original condition that I could not but restore it back to original. The owner used to be a lumber jack and him and all his friends brought buses because they were so reliable and had good ground clearance. That is why the seat was removed out the bus as to make space for the equipment and then sleeping space. He de-registered the bus in 1987 after it was driven to his farm somewhere in the Karoo there he placed it on bricks where it stood until my dad went to collect it from there.

My dad did most of the work on it the past 6 months including the spray painting. We finally got it on the Natis system 2 weeks ago so hopefully she will go for road worthy Tuesday and then I am thinking of using her as a daily driver for a couple of months until my buggy is completed.

65 Models had the sparewheel in the luggage area at the rear, so there was no bulge behind the rear seat. 65 Was the first year to get the later type warm air outlets (with selector lever) for the driver's feet. 64 And earlier and Fleetlines use a more crude system there. 65 Was also the last year to have the dipswitch on the floor, and the large inner front door opening handles. 66 And 67 changed to a smaller lever.

Saw an old 8mm movie of my uncle taking reception of his brand new dark blue kombi at the VW dealer in Oudtshoorn. He drove it straight from there to a spraypainter to have the upper part sprayed white, like a de luxe. (It gets VERY hot there). Maybe there was a longer waiting list for twotone versions at the time,or it worked out cheaper that way, dont know.
Anyway, yours could be original.
