The following topic thread, recently initiated on the Australian Kombi Club forum, illustrates the optional, larger-capacity, paper-element air filter, specified under M-Code 569, for the 1979 VW 2000 Type 2, for dusty conditions in Australia and South Africa:

There seems to be some difficulty, obtaining replacement air-filter elements in Australia, so I wonder about the current availability in South Africa!?!
