I also think it's not that bad. Did you see my Ghia's before pic's? At least I know what I've got with this one. I'm starting from scratch.

Got another bus to help out with body panels and some other bits. It's a '79 complete and running 2l auto. It's about to be cut into pieces

Didi, can I buy the chrome VW badge and the headlight trim rings from you, since you are breaking it up?

Ok, so it's been a while since I did anything. Yesterday I stripped the engine. I spent the day yesterday at Bill Noble's place taking everything apart. Thanks Bill!

Positives:
The case is standard.

Negatives:
The heads have different valve sizes. The 043 head has some nasty cracks and the standard head has some broken off cooling fins
Low compression pistons
Crank is standard but the flywheel came loose at some stage and was poorly re drilled
Flywheel is rubbish
Generator not alternator
Carburetor is worn
Dizzy is broken

I'm going to remove some pratley steel with a dremel from the block and take it to the engineers. Maybe I have a good base to start off with. It's a late Mexican AS41 case.

The project is moving forward. Jan is busy sorting out some rust. Cutting the vrot pieces out and replacing it with metal from another baywindow.

Lekker! And the best bit is to look back on the project when you have a brand new painted bus and you start adding the little bits like lights and trims...

All the best man! :hangloose:

Nice Bus Didi I have a 70 Westy called "Naked Fury" in similar condition (tin worm real bad) and I love it.
The question now is where to start as structural bits are starting to depart the body during motion.
The inside is original and great condition but the body sheez broken. I might need to consider a new body like you've done but i need to pluck up the courage to start. Good luck and god speed in getting her back on the road.

I went to the shop to get some fibreglass goodies to repair my Westy poptop and got a little sidetracked.

Good idea getting the other bus....was going to offer shipping you panels if you needed from the UK but your plan will be cheaper and easier!

Love the beetle shell.....now just to get Barry to help you build the chassis and floor!

Thanks Dutch, I got a sliding door seal from the UK seeing that they have RHD busses as well. Price was damn good. Didn't get the window kit from there because their 1/4 vents on the front window cannot open!

I have to admit, I have no experience in building/fabricating chassis and floors, I'm in for something challenging with the beetle shell.

I'm busy with the engine rebuild, no sorry, I should say Bill (forcecooled) is busy with the engine rebuild. I got a replacement crank and flywheel. I will be putting in the original 1600 engine with some slight mods like a full flow oil filter and a slight cam.
The tinware was mediablasted and is ready for some 2k black
Image

Another nice thing is that I've got some goodies on it's way from Busdepot 8)
Service(s): International Parcels
Status: Processed through Sort Facility
Your item was processed through and left our PHILADELPHIA, PA 19116 facility on January 08, 2011. The item is currently in transit to the destination. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.

The metalwork is still pretty much where it was when I posted 09 November '10, but the bus is now inside the shop, so hopefully I will be able to see progress.

Spent the whole day with Jan at his place stripping another bus front skin. We had to strip it layer by layer and mock fitting it onto my bus.

This is also welded in by now
